Rookie goaltender Jacob Fowler delivered a record-setting performance on Tuesday night, stopping all 46 shots he faced to propel the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center. The shutout marked Fowler's second of the season, the third of his NHL career, and his sixth consecutive win between the pipes for Montreal.

Fowler's 46-save masterpiece etched his name into the league and franchise history books. According to official NHL tracking data dating back to the 1955-56 season, Fowler set an NHL record for the most saves in a shutout by a goaltender aged 21 or younger, eclipsing the previous mark of 45 shared by Bill Ranford and Steve Mason. The performance also established a new Canadiens rookie franchise benchmark for saves in a shutout, passing the 41 saves posted by Cayden Primeau in 2024 and Hall of Famer Tony Esposito in 1968. Overall, Fowler's workload produced the third-highest save total in a shutout in Montreal's storied history, behind only Jacques Plante's 52 saves in 1955 and Sam Montembeault's 48 in 2024.

After turning away shot after shot, Fowler credited his teammates for their work in front of him while acknowledging the heavy workload. "You definitely get into a rhythm -- I'm a little tired after but we've got a few days off so I'm sure I'll be fine," Fowler said following the contest. "I think if you ask a lot of guys, they play their best hockey when you don't have time to think, you just react. I just had a good night." Montreal forward Florian Xhekaj marveled at the young goaltender's composure, noting that Fowler consistently rises to big moments and makes it easy for skaters on the ice.

Montreal broke the scoreless tie midway through the second period when Zachary Bolduc capitalized against his former club. At 8:37 of the frame, Bolduc roofed a sharp-angle one-timer from the bottom of the right circle off a feed from defenseman Mike Matheson, with Alexandre Texier collecting the secondary assist. The goal marked Bolduc's fifth of the season and his first against the Blues since St. Louis selected him in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft and later traded him to Montreal for defenseman Logan Mailloux.

The Canadiens doubled their advantage 2:17 into the third period courtesy of Xhekaj's first career NHL goal. Matheson sent a wrist shot from the blue line that Xhekaj deflected twice, first off Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington and then into the net. Although the play underwent an official video review for a potential high stick, the goal stood. Matheson finished the evening with two assists, while Kirby Dach also picked up an assist on the insurance marker.

St. Louis responded with an aggressive push, bombarding Fowler during a third period in which the Blues outshot Montreal 24-3. In an unusual tactical gamble, Blues head coach Jim Montgomery pulled Binnington for an extra attacker with seven minutes remaining in regulation. St. Louis maintained sustained offensive-zone pressure for the rest of the game, but Fowler repeatedly shut the door, including multiple second-effort stops to seal the victory. Montgomery praised Fowler's performance afterward, calling him incredible and acknowledging that the rookie was simply too difficult to beat.

Fowler's stellar outing solidified his grip on Montreal's starting crease. Through seven appearances this season, the rookie holds a 6-1-0 record, a 1.54 goals-against average, a .942 save percentage, and two shutouts, emerging as an early front-runner for the Calder Memorial Trophy. His recent surge comes as fellow netminder Jakub Dobes has faced early-season difficulties and veteran Sam Montembeault remains sidelined on injured reserve.

The victory improved the Canadiens to 7-3-2 on the season, extending their point streak to five games and concluding a back-to-back stretch that began with an outdoor triumph over the Winnipeg Jets. For the Blues (5-6-1), the loss marked their second straight shutout defeat at home, following a 4-0 loss to Carolina. Montreal will conclude its four-game road trip against the Dallas Stars on Thursday night, while St. Louis continues its homestand against the Boston Bruins.
