The Chicago White Sox are parting ways with assistant hitting coach Joel McKeithan, who has accepted a promotion to become the lead hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. McKeithan's departure follows a successful 2026 season in which the White Sox offense led the American League in runs scored and ranked fifth in Major League Baseball for home runs.

McKeithan joined the White Sox organization in 2025 following a two-year stint as a lead hitting coach for the Cincinnati Reds. During his two seasons in Chicago, he worked alongside hitting coaches Marcus Thames in 2025 and Derek Shomon during the most recent campaign, drawing consistent praise from the team's coaching staff.

White Sox hitting director Ryan Fuller acknowledged the reality of having staff members recruited by other organizations for promotions. "That is what I want here," Fuller stated during the season regarding his coaches being targeted by rival clubs. "Where other people recognize the work that's being put in, where players are buying into the system, they're making adjustments, they're getting better. That's a natural part of it, unfortunately."

While White Sox general manager Chris Getz previously expressed an expectation to retain the coaching staff for the 2027 season, losing personnel to higher positions elsewhere remains a common occurrence for successful franchises. Lead hitting coach Derek Shomon and major league assistant Tony Medina are still anticipated to return to guide the major league hitting operations, with an external hire considered the most probable solution to fill McKeithan's vacancy.

The coaching departure is not the only offseason movement drawing attention within the organization. Other staff members have also drawn interest across the league, with bench coach Walker McKinven interviewing for the Seattle Mariners managerial position and assistant general manager Josh Barfield interviewing for the Houston Astros general manager role.

As the White Sox prepare for the upcoming campaign, the front office will look to maintain offensive momentum while restructuring the coaching staff to replace the outgoing assistant hitting coach.
