Wegovy Oral Tablets Arrive in French Pharmacies
The anti-obesity medication is now available in tablet form across France, though it comes without government reimbursement and with strict daily dosing requirements.
The anti-obesity treatment Wegovy became available in pharmacies across France in tablet form on Monday, marking a significant milestone as the first GLP-1 receptor agonist medication marketed orally in the country. Previously, the treatment developed by Danish pharmaceutical manufacturer Novo Nordisk was only offered via weekly injections. The arrival of the oral version provides an alternative for adult patients who prefer to avoid needles, joining a growing global market for weight-loss therapeutics.
The oral medication contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in the injectable version. The drug functions by mimicking an intestinal hormone that regulates appetite and increases the feeling of fullness. According to European medical guidelines, the treatment is prescribed strictly for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 and above who suffer from at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 hypertension, diabetes, or sleep apnea. It is intended to be used alongside a balanced diet and physical activity rather than for cosmetic weight loss.
Patients seeking the new oral treatment will face significant out-of-pocket costs because the medication is not currently covered by French social security. While certain injectable forms of the treatment receive reimbursement for severe cases under strict conditions, the tablet has no public reimbursement at launch. Monthly expenses range from 169 euros to 235 euros depending on the dosage prescribed, with individual pharmacies permitted to set their own retail prices.
In addition to the financial investment, taking the daily pill requires strict adherence to a morning routine. Patients must ingest the tablet first thing in the morning while fasting for at least eight hours, using only a small amount of water. They must then wait a minimum of thirty minutes before consuming any food, beverages, or other medications. Medical professionals note that these precise constraints are essential to ensure proper absorption and effectiveness of the drug.
Clinical trials have demonstrated that the oral formulation offers weight-loss efficacy comparable to the injectable versions. Studies indicate that patients achieved an average weight reduction of approximately 13 to 17 percent over a period of roughly 15 to 16 weeks of treatment. Common side effects remain similar to other GLP-1 medications, primarily involving gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.
The launch occurs amid intensifying competition in the weight-loss pharmaceutical sector between Novo Nordisk and American rival Eli Lilly. Industry experts point out that while approximately 100,000 patients in France already utilize the injectable version of Wegovy, the new pill aims to capture individuals who previously avoided treatment due to a reluctance toward self-injections. Health economists estimate that the broader economic and social cost of obesity in France totals roughly 18 billion euros annually, driving intense interest in accessible and effective long-term pharmacological solutions.
