Vivek Ramaswamy Defends Campaign Ad Featuring Amy Acton's Estranged Mother
The Republican gubernatorial candidate's campaign confirmed it produced the controversial advertisement amid widespread bipartisan criticism.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has confirmed that his campaign produced and funded a controversial political advertisement featuring his Democratic opponent Amy Acton's estranged mother, Donna Arthur. The ad, which is part of a planned $4 million media buy in the closing weeks of the Ohio governor's race, shows Arthur speaking directly to the camera and calling her daughter a liar.
The commercial quickly sparked intense backlash across the political spectrum after circulating online. In the video, Arthur claims her daughter has lied about her past, including her childhood experiences. However, the ad omits critical context regarding the decades-long estrangement between Acton and her mother, which began after Acton accused her former stepfather of severe childhood abuse and sexual assault.
Acton, a physician and the former director of the Ohio Department of Health, has openly discussed facing homelessness and abuse during her youth. According to historical court documents and statements from her brother, Philip Stearns, Acton and her brother were removed from their mother's custody after her stepfather was indicted on rape charges in 1978. The stepfather fled the state to avoid prosecution and never stood trial before dying in 2004, while Arthur remained married to him until his death.
Responding to the commercial, Acton condemned Ramaswamy on social media, accusing him of exploiting her family trauma and her mother's mental state for political gain. Her campaign also released a counter-ad featuring her brother, who forcefully criticized the Ramaswamy campaign for turning childhood sexual abuse into a political talking point.
As the controversy grew, several high-profile Republicans joined Democrats in denouncing the commercial. Commentator Meghan McCain called the ad dastardly and shameful, while former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley criticized Ramaswamy on social media. Additionally, Republican primary opponent Casey Putsch announced he would cross party lines to vote for Acton, and the editorial board of The Columbus Dispatch labeled the ad revolting and unsettling.
Despite the mounting criticism, the Ramaswamy campaign doubled down on the commercial. Campaign representatives defended the decision by arguing that the public needs to be aware of questions regarding Acton's credibility before deciding who to entrust as governor. Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, stating that whether the ad was appropriate was not his primary concern, while expressing frustration with fellow Republicans focusing on the controversy rather than broader political goals.
The fierce debate unfolds in an exceptionally tight race for the Ohio governorship to succeed term-limited Republican Governor Mike DeWine. Early voting is already underway, and Election Day is scheduled for November 3.
