Ramaswamy Faces Bipartisan Backlash Over Campaign Ad Featuring Amy Acton's Estranged Mother
The Republican candidate is spending $4 million to promote a controversial video involving his Democratic opponent's childhood.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is facing severe bipartisan criticism after his campaign confirmed it produced a controversial political advertisement featuring the estranged mother of his Democratic opponent, Amy Acton. The one-minute video, which the campaign plans to support with a $4 million US media buy, introduces a deeply personal element into the high-profile and expensive race for the Ohio governorship as the November 3 midterms approach.
The advertisement features Donna Arthur, Acton's birth mother, who calls her daughter a liar and claims she has mental health issues and a serious problem with the truth. The video initially surfaced on social media without the legally required disclaimer tag identifying its financial backer. Acton's campaign and supporters have strongly condemned the spot, which has already been seen by voters as early voting moves forward across the state.
Acton has long been public about surviving severe abuse, hunger, and neglect during her childhood. According to decades-old police and court documents, Acton's stepfather was arrested and charged with raping her in 1978 when she was 12 years old. Cledith Arthur pleaded not guilty and later fled the state, dying in 2004 without ever facing trial. Acton and her brother, Philip Stearns, were removed from their mother's custody following the incident, and Acton has not seen her mother since a 1978 courtroom appearance.
Stearns issued a fierce rebuttal to the Ramaswamy campaign ad, releasing a statement and a video condemning the use of his sister's childhood trauma as a political talking point. "It's not surprising that Vivek Ramaswamy has stooped to such a despicable low as to attempt to turn the sexual abuse Amy endured at 12 years old from our birth mother's husband into a political talking point," Stearns said, adding that their mother had remained married to the perpetrator until his death.
Acton also pushed back against the attack in interviews, stating that she refuses to normalize the exploitation of her childhood suffering for political gain. "My brother Phil and I endured abuse, hunger, and neglect," Acton said, noting that her mother was deeply unwell. Several political figures and commentators from both parties have joined in condemning the ad, calling it unsettling and dastardly.
Conservative radio host Jason Rantz announced that the controversy completely changed his mind about supporting Ramaswamy, while former Republican primary rival Casey Putsch stated he would cross party lines to vote for Acton in protest. Prominent national figures like Meghan McCain also sharply criticized the strategy on social media, describing the advertisement as something that should never have been created.
Despite the mounting criticism and high-profile defections, Ramaswamy defended the release of the video during a Tuesday press briefing. He argued that the ad is legitimate and maintained that Acton has avoided discussing substantive policy issues or participating in debates. Ramaswamy's campaign spokesperson, Connie Luck, previously defended the move by labeling Acton a serial fabulist.
The fierce dispute unfolds as recent polling indicates a tightening race, with early voting already drawing hundreds of thousands of ballots in Ohio. While Ramaswamy's team bets that the aggressive strategy can sway persuadable voters, the heavy financial investment risks deeply alienating portions of the electorate as the final weeks of the campaign play out.
