Villarreal Suffers Home Defeat Against Espanyol Amid Growing Concerns
The team fell 0-1 at the Estadio de la Cerámica following a second-half goal by Cabrera, deepening its early-season struggles.
The Villarreal CF fell 0-1 to the RCD Espanyol at the Estadio de la Cerámica during the eleventh matchday of LaLiga EA Sports. A second-half goal by Cabrera in the 60th minute secured the victory for the visitors, leaving the home side with another disappointing result in front of its fans.
The match began with a blow for the hosts as captain Gerard Moreno had to leave the pitch in the 17th minute due to a muscular injury, adding to the team's ongoing roster challenges that already included the absences of Foyth and Diatta. Without Moreno, Villarreal struggled to find fluidity and precision in its transitions during the first half.
Espanyol, watched from the stands by its new manager Eder Sarabia, displayed a disciplined and organized performance that effectively neutralized the offensive attempts of the home team. Despite creating some early danger through individual efforts, Villarreal failed to break down the defensive block.
Following a disallowed goal for Espanyol early in the second half, the visitors capitalized when Cabrera appeared unmarked inside the area to finish a cross and score the only goal of the match. Villarreal attempted to respond through tactical changes and attacking substitutes, but the team's offense remained disorganized and precipitated.
Villarreal manager Iñigo Pérez addressed the media after the match, describing the result as a major setback. "After the match the feelings are not good, obviously after losing at home when we were talking about a dynamic at least on the rise, and today's is a sudden stop, it is a difficult moment because we have to assimilate it," Pérez stated.
Defender Pau Navarro also expressed his frustration following the defeat, pointing out both the team's internal responsibilities and his disappointment with sections of the crowd leaving early. "We must demand three points at home and we must count on the support of the fans, the field cannot be empty in the 70th minute because in other fields the fans support a lot," Navarro said.
The defeat leaves Villarreal looking for answers as it prepares for its upcoming Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain at home. Meanwhile, Espanyol celebrates a crucial away victory that provides a strong start under its new coaching direction.
