India Defeats New Zealand in First T20I Thriller
Sanju Samson and late-inning cameos powered India to a historic run chase in Christchurch.
India secured a dramatic four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening match of their five-match T20 international series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday. Pulling off their highest-ever chase in T20 cricket, the visiting side successfully overcame a challenging target amidst a tense finish.
Put in to bat first, New Zealand posted a formidable total of 225 for 4 in their 20 overs. The host team's innings was spearheaded by an explosive 82 not out off 40 balls from Glenn Phillips and a brisk 45 off 24 deliveries by Finn Allen. The aggressive partnership highlighted early bowling struggles for India, which included Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceding 49 runs on his international return after an absence of 1,430 days.
In response, India experienced a flying start, racing to 94 for 1 during the powerplay. Sanju Samson maintained his impressive form this calendar year by anchoring the top order with a sublime knock of 67 runs off 33 balls, featuring eight boundaries and four sixes. Opening partner Abhishek Sharma contributed 29 runs off 12 deliveries, helping establish a commanding platform for the visitors.
However, the match took an unpredictable turn during the middle overs as New Zealand's spin duo of Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell dismantled the batting lineup. India suffered a sudden collapse, losing three wickets for just seven runs and slipping from a comfortable position to 122 for 4 by the 11th over. The long boundaries at the venue also tested the batters, with several players caught trying to clear the ropes.
Captain Shreyas Iyer stepped up to steady the innings with 42 runs, though he benefited from a dropped catch by Finn Allen in the 15th over when 55 runs were still required from the final 30 balls. Alongside Iyer, Naman Dhir delivered a crucial unbeaten cameo of 42 runs off only 15 balls to relieve mounting pressure.
With timely boundary strikes in the closing stages, Dhir and his captain guided the team across the finish line with two balls to spare, ending the innings at 230 for 6 in 19.4 overs. The hard-fought victory gave India a 1-0 lead in the bilateral series.
The second T20 match of the series is scheduled to take place at the same venue in Christchurch on Saturday, where New Zealand will look to bounce back and level the score.
