Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death for Rugby Player Hyron Andrews
The 31-year-old South African forward passed away in France due to an aortic dissection.
The official cause of death for professional rugby player Hyron Andrews has been released following an autopsy conducted by French authorities. The 31-year-old South African forward tragically passed away last Friday in France, where he was located ahead of the Johannesburg Lions' Champions Cup match against La Rochelle.
According to the autopsy report announced by the Lions, Andrews died from natural causes after suffering an aortic dissection, which most likely occurred on an aortic aneurysm. French authorities described the medical emergency as a tear in the main artery that caused a significant accumulation of blood within the sac surrounding the heart.
Andrews was discovered unresponsive in a shower cubicle at the team location the day before the scheduled fixture. Paramedics attempted resuscitation at the scene, but he was ultimately pronounced dead. Following the tragedy, the Lions proceeded to play their match against La Rochelle in his honor, receiving respectful applause from French supporters at the Stade Marcel-Deflandre.
The sports world has shared widespread tributes in memory of the late forward, who previously spent two and a half seasons playing for the Sale Sharks in England before joining the Lions. Alex Sanderson, the director of rugby at Sale, remembered him as a brilliant and charismatic teammate who made a lasting impression during his time in Manchester.
Andrews's American wife, Maighlin, shared an emotional public tribute following the confirmation of his autopsy results. The couple, who met in Durban a decade ago while she was studying abroad, married in Michigan in 2023 and share two young sons together. Reflecting on their lives and future plans, she expressed deep sorrow over their time being cut short.
In her statement posted to social media, Maighlin described the profound devastation felt by their family, friends, and teammates around the world. She praised her late husband as an exceptional father and thanked the public for the overwhelming support and kindness received during this difficult period.
The Andrews family is currently working through the repatriation process to return his body to South Africa. The Lions organization announced that Andrews's body remains in France under official care while arrangements are finalized, and further updates will be communicated under the guidance of the family.
