Ty Jerome Scores 40 Points as Grizzlies Fall to Pelicans in Overtime
Despite Ty Jerome's stellar 40-point performance, the Memphis Grizzlies suffered their first defeat of the season in a 135-134 overtime thriller against the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Memphis Grizzlies saw their undefeated start to the NBA season come to an end following a narrow 135-134 loss in overtime to the New Orleans Pelicans. Guard Ty Jerome led the charge for Memphis with a remarkable 40-point performance, but strong offensive rebounding and standout efforts from the Pelicans' frontcourt ultimately sealed the outcome.
Jerome returned to the lineup after missing a previous game due to a back issue and nearly carried his team to victory single-handedly. Facing a nine-point deficit with 1:55 remaining in regulation, Jerome sparked a furious rally by scoring on four consecutive possessions, including a clutch tying floater with just 4.6 seconds left on the clock to force the extra period.
His superhero effort featured 14-of-22 shooting from the field, including five three-pointers, along with five rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 37 minutes of action. It marked his second 40-point game of the young season, continuing a stellar individual campaign where he has assumed a much larger role in the Memphis backcourt.
Despite Jerome's heroics, the Pelicans capitalized on crucial second-chance opportunities. New Orleans outrebounded Memphis 14-11 on the offensive glass. The decisive play arrived in overtime when Jeremiah Fears secured an offensive rebound, drew a foul, and converted two layups with 7.1 seconds remaining to secure the go-ahead victory for the visitors.
The Pelicans also benefited from career-best production and tough matchups created by their frontcourt. Croatian big man Karlo Matkovic delivered a career game with 25 points and six rebounds, while Zion Williamson recorded 25 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Derik Queen also caused tactical problems for Memphis with his quickness and floor-stretching ability.
For Memphis, center Zach Edey endured a difficult outing while battling persistent foul trouble. Edey picked up his fourth foul in the second quarter and his fifth early in the third, which disrupted his rhythm and limited his effectiveness on both ends of the floor as New Orleans utilized five-out lineups to pull him away from the basket.
With the hard-fought victory, the New Orleans Pelicans improved their record to 3-4 and extended their winning streak to three games before returning home to host the Utah Jazz and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Meanwhile, the Memphis Grizzlies dropped to 6-1, looking ahead to bounce back from their first loss of the campaign.
