Tori Deal Defends The Challenge Season 42 Victory Amid Rigging Accusations

The reality TV champion pushes back against online claims that her team's win was unfairly assisted by production.

Tori Deal is defending her victory on "The Challenge" Season 42 finale after viewers accused production of rigging the competition in her team's favor. Deal, 33, pushed back against the online backlash, emphasizing that the physical demands of the final race were entirely real and grueling.

The controversy arose after the Orange Team — consisting of Deal, Johnny "Bananas" Devenanzio, CT Tamburello, Michele Fitzgerald, and Will Gagnon — secured a victory over the Gray Team, which included Adrienne Naylor, Alexis Lete, Cassidy Clark, and Cara Maria Sorbello. During the two-day, 27-mile final, Tamburello required medical assistance due to extreme heat. He was evaluated and allowed to rejoin his team at a later checkpoint without receiving a time penalty.

The lack of a penalty allowed the Orange Team to maintain their lead and ultimately win the $550,000 grand prize. This led to accusations from fans on social media that the show favored its veteran franchise players by allowing Tamburello to return without consequence.

Addressing the criticism, Deal explained that contestants often operate without knowing the full set of rules beforehand, particularly following the show's transition from MTV to Paramount+ for this season. She noted that players were aware that a medical evaluation period would not inherently tank a team unless it resulted in an actual medical disqualification.

"Rigged makes me feel like I didn't have to actually run 27 miles," Deal said. "That was one of the hardest things I've ever done. The claims about how the final race played out take away from the amount of work it took to actually cross that finish line."

As the winning team's captain, Deal held control over how the $550,000 prize was distributed. Rather than taking a larger share or executing a dramatic cash steal, she split the money equally among her four teammates, keeping just an extra four dollars—a playful one-dollar "captain's fee" from each member—leaving her with a total payout of $110,004.

Deal revealed she had planned the minor twist three weeks in advance to make her teammates nervous, noting that they ultimately made her swear on her cat's life that she would not steal their money. Some fans had online suggested she should have taken Devenanzio's share as payback for his infamous 2016 move on "The Challenge: Rivals III," where he stole $275,000 from Sarah Rice. However, Deal dismissed the idea, stating she preferred to focus on her own game rather than act as an instrument of karma.

Regarding the future of the long-running series, Deal noted that "The Challenge" has not yet been officially renewed for a Season 43, and she has not received any casting calls yet, leaving the show's return uncertain.
