Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini takes on American competitor Brandon Nakashima in the first round of the Rolex Paris Masters. The match takes place on the indoor hard courts at La Défense Arena during the final ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season.

Entering the match, Berrettini holds a 20-18 record on the main circuit for the 2026 season. His strongest performances on the year came on clay surfaces, featuring a quarterfinal run at the Rio de Janeiro ATP 500 and reaching the second round at the Roland Garros before withdrawing against Flavio Cobolli due to injury. More recently, the 30-year-old Roman reached the quarterfinals at the Vienna ATP 500 event last week, marking his first time winning consecutive matches in a single tournament since Wimbledon.

His opponent, Brandon Nakashima, enters the matchup as the 14th seed and holds the number 18 spot in the ATP rankings. The 25-year-old American arrives with a 36-22 record for the season, highlighted by reaching the finals at the Brisbane International and the Canadian Open in Montreal.

The head-to-head record between the two athletes stands even at one win apiece. Berrettini claimed victory in four sets during their first meeting in the opening round of the 2022 Australian Open. Nakashima answered last month at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, defeating the Italian in two tightly contested sets during the second round.

The tournament in the French capital serves as the final event of the season for Berrettini, who did not qualify for the ATP Finals based on accumulated points and is not part of the Davis Cup squad. A victory in Paris would allow Berrettini to advance to the second round, where the winner will face Frenchman Ugo Humbert after Humbert defeated Botic van de Zandschulp in three sets.

Throughout his career, Berrettini has competed in the Paris Masters four times while still chasing his first main-draw victory at the tournament. Nakashima shares a similar history at the prestigious indoor event, also seeking his initial win at the venue.

The match highlights a busy opening-round schedule at the 40th anniversary of the season's final indoor ATP 1000 tournament. With top seeds receiving opening-round byes, players outside the top tier are competing fiercely to secure remaining points and finish the tennis year on a positive note.
