Thunder Defeat Nuggets 96-84 Despite Gilgeous-Alexander Scoring Struggles

Oklahoma City secures a home victory as stellar defensive execution overshadows the end of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's historic scoring streak.

The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Denver Nuggets 96-84 at the Paycom Center, overcoming an uncharacteristic shooting performance from star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to improve their record early in the season. Despite the victory, the game marked the end of a historic streak for Gilgeous-Alexander, whose run of consecutive regular-season games with at least 20 points finally came to a close after 141 games.

Gilgeous-Alexander finished the night with 17 points on 6-of-19 shooting from the field. He struggled significantly in the opening half, missing all seven of his field-goal attempts and relying solely on two free throws before halftime. It marked his first scoreless half from the field since his rookie season. He finally connected on his first basket during the third quarter and later added a transition three-pointer to help his team regain control.

Rather than dwelling on the end of his remarkable streak, which previously surpassed Wilt Chamberlain's record of 126 consecutive games, Gilgeous-Alexander maintained a positive perspective. Jalen Williams shared the star guard's locker room reaction after the final buzzer, noting that his teammate immediately looked forward to starting anew. "I’ll just restart," Williams quoted Gilgeous-Alexander as saying, adding that he noted having 80 games left.

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault praised his star player's attitude and unselfishness throughout the night, stating he would have kept him on the floor to chase the milestone if needed. "I was going to leave him," Daigneault said. "His perspective in that situation and his competitive class" are further reasons for admiration, according to the coach.

Oklahoma City's defense ultimately made the decisive difference in the matchup. The Thunder held the Nuggets to just 84 points, limiting Denver to under 40% shooting from the field. Nikola Jokic experienced a quiet night of his own for Denver, recording 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists on 5-of-19 shooting.

With their leading scorer enduring a difficult shooting night, other members of the Thunder stepped up to shoulder the offensive load. Jalen Williams led Oklahoma City with 21 points, while Chet Holmgren anchored the paint with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Ajay Mitchell also provided a spark off the bench with 12 points.

The victory follows Oklahoma City's strong season-opening win against the San Antonio Spurs. Entering the contest with the exact same injury report as opening night, the Thunder played without Otega Oweh, Thomas Sorber, and Nikola Topic, who remain sidelined. Following this divisional matchup against Denver, the Thunder will enjoy a couple of days off before preparing for a home back-to-back starting against the Los Angeles Clippers.
