Temporary Post Office Opens in Maidenhead Town Centre
A new temporary Post Office branch has opened inside a Co-op convenience store following the closure of the previous location.
A new temporary Post Office officially opened its doors to the public on Thursday inside a Co-op convenience store located in Maidenhead town centre. The launch provides a much-needed local postal service for residents, businesses, and shoppers following the closure of the previous branch earlier this year.
The temporary facility is situated at the Welcome Co-op store on 50 Queen Street. While the broader convenience store had initially planned to open on the same day, its official retail opening was pushed back to November 19 to allow additional time for planning and necessary approvals.
Charul Patel, the owner of the franchise convenience store and an experienced postmaster, agreed to open the postal branch ahead of the rest of the shop to serve the community. Officials noted that the community was exceptionally keen to see a post office re-open in the town center.
A spokesperson for Southern Co-op explained that customers visiting the temporary post office are guided by barriers directly to a clearly marked queuing area located near the tills. The remaining sections of the convenience store will stay closed to the public until the official retail opening next month.
The temporary branch operates from Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM, and on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Gaurav Vyas, Post Office independent partner lead, emphasized the importance of having a functional post office in the heart of the town.
“We know how important a Post Office is to a town centre,” Vyas stated, highlighting the efforts made to find a convenient interim solution for the local population. A fuller range of services that were previously available will eventually return when a permanent branch is established.
The previous Post Office branch was formerly situated inside the TG Jones store before shutting down permanently in May. Since that closure, local stakeholders have actively pursued alternative options to restore comprehensive postal access to the area.
Plans have already been submitted to the Royal Borough seeking permission for new signs at 26-32 High Street, pointing toward a potential permanent location. The application remains under review while the temporary Queen Street facility handles immediate community needs.
