Storm Austen Threatens Liverpool Match and Disrupts Travel Services

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning as high winds from Storm Austen approach the region, placing upcoming sports fixtures and ferry crossings in doubt.

Adverse weather conditions are threatening scheduled events and transportation services in Liverpool as Storm Austen approaches the region. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning that covers the area from midday Saturday through 9:00 PM on Sunday, bringing concerns of very windy conditions throughout the weekend.

The severe weather forecast has placed Liverpool's upcoming Premier League fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield in potential jeopardy. The match, which is scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 PM GMT, is facing scrutiny for safety reasons due to anticipated wind gusts reaching between 55 and 60 miles per hour.

Decisions regarding whether the game will proceed remain the responsibility of the local Safety Advisory Group. The committee, which includes representatives from both football clubs, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council, evaluates conditions based strictly on public safety rather than pitch playability.

Recent history shows that the region is vulnerable to weather-related disruptions. A Merseyside derby at Goodison Park was postponed in December 2024 after Storm Darragh brought gusts of up to 90 miles per hour, and a home match against Manchester United nearly faced postponement the following month due to heavy overnight snow around Anfield.

Beyond the sporting schedule, the severe weather has already impacted travel in the wider area. The Steam Packet ferry operator announced the cancellation of multiple sailings, including afternoon Manannan crossings to Liverpool and back, due to the approaching storm and strong winds.

Ferry services have warned passengers of potential disruptions affecting crossings between Friday morning and Sunday evening. Travelers and sports fans alike are advised to check for the latest updates as Storm Austen continues to track across the region.
