Sporting Lisbon Parts Ways With Rui Borges as Paulo Fonseca Nears Takeover
The Portuguese club is reportedly set to appoint Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca following a slow start to the domestic season.
Sporting Lisbon has begun discussions to terminate the employment contract of head coach Rui Borges following a sluggish start to the domestic campaign. Reserve-team coach Tiago Fernandes has taken temporary control of the first team on an interim basis ahead of Tuesday's UEFA Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk in London.
Borges took over at Sporting in December 2024, succeeding João Pereira, and guided the club to a successful defense of its Portuguese league title and a run to the Champions League quarterfinals last season. However, recent setbacks—including a 2-2 draw against Arouca, a defeat to Académico de Viseu, and a home loss to LASK in Europe—weakened his position as Sporting slipped to third in the league table, sitting nine points behind leaders Porto after ten matches.
Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca is widely reported to be the leading candidate to replace Borges. According to French media and sources close to Ligue 1, Fonseca informed his Lyon players of his departure following a 2-0 win over Angers on Sunday. Foot Mercato reported that Fonseca was set to travel to Portugal to finalize a contract running until 2030, with Lyon expected to receive a fee of approximately five million euros.
The impending managerial switch has drawn mixed reactions across the football world. Former France star Christophe Dugarry criticized the timing of the departure during a podcast appearance, expressing frustration over managers leaving clubs mid-season. Meanwhile, Lyon assistant Jorge Maciel is expected to manage the French side for their upcoming fixtures against Real Sociedad and Brest before former Braga coach Carlos Vicens takes over permanently.
For Sporting players, such as Australian winger Nestory Irankunda, the coaching change introduces a new tactical landscape. Irankunda had established himself as a regular starter under Borges, developing a strong connection with striker Luis Suárez. Fonseca is known for favoring possession-based football, fluid movement, and narrower positioning for wingers, which could demand further tactical adaptation from the young forward.
If finalized, Fonseca's tenure could begin as early as Saturday with a home match against Moreirense at the Estádio José Alvalade. That fixture precedes a crucial away match against unbeaten Porto on November 29, a game that could heavily influence Sporting's ambitions of closing the gap at the top of the Liga Portugal standings.
