Spanish Mechanic Ángel Gaitán Abruptly Leaves European Parliament Hearing
The social media personality walked out of a public session in Brussels after being denied additional time to present his arguments on automotive regulations.
Spanish mechanic and social media figure Ángel Gaitán made headlines this week following a tense confrontation at the European Parliament in Brussels. Invited as an expert in vehicle safety and forensic analysis, Gaitán participated in a public hearing organized by the Committee on Petitions (PETI) regarding vehicle safety, mobility, and accessibility within the European Union.
The incident occurred when the presiding officials signaled that his allotted time for speaking had expired. Gaitán, who had been detailing his concerns regarding the automotive industry, protested the time limitation and requested to continue his presentation. Upon being denied further time, he expressed his frustration, labeled the proceedings a "shame," and exited the room. Several representatives from political groups, including the PP, Vox, and Se Acabó la Fiesta, reportedly left the chamber in solidarity with him.
In his subsequent remarks on social media, Gaitán claimed that the hearing failed to address the realities of the automotive sector, specifically criticizing the European Union's regulatory framework. He argued that current policies regarding electrification, emissions, and rising vehicle costs place an undue burden on citizens. He specifically cited the price increase of entry-level vehicles, such as the Dacia Sandero, as evidence of the financial strain placed on average consumers.
Gaitán also used the platform to criticize environmental labeling systems and the implementation of safety devices like V16 beacons, which he described as discriminatory and ineffective. He further contended that the focus on strict anti-pollution regulations has led to a system where vehicle owners often bypass or disable complex emissions systems because they cannot afford the necessary repairs. He argued that these regulations are disconnected from the economic reality of the average European driver.
The hearing, which was intended to be a consultative session to hear from experts and review citizen petitions, did not involve the drafting or approval of new legislation. While supporters of Gaitán praised his vocal stance against what he described as excessive bureaucracy, critics characterized his behavior as unprofessional and disruptive to the formal proceedings of the European Parliament.
The session highlighted a broader debate regarding the future of the European automotive industry, as participants discussed the challenges of balancing environmental goals with economic accessibility. As the automotive landscape continues to shift toward stricter emissions standards, the tension between regulatory bodies and industry advocates remains a significant point of contention in European policy discussions.
