South Africa and Australia met at Newlands in Cape Town for the third and final Test of their series, with the World Test Championship matchup currently tied at 1-1. The decisive encounter follows an opening victory for Australia by 214 runs in Durban, which was followed by a strong recovery from South Africa to win the second match by an innings and 31 runs in Gqeberha.

Aiden Markram was named in the starting XI for South Africa alongside teammates Marques Ackerman, David Bedingham, captain Temba Bavuma, Matthew Breetzke, wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Simon Harmer, Gerald Coetzee, and Kagiso Rabada. During the opening sessions of the third Test, Markram worked to anchor the innings as his team faced the Australian bowling attack.

Australia entered the crucial series finale dealing with a significant lineup change. Experienced batter Steve Smith was ruled out of the match due to a neck injury. Smith experienced stiffness during the team's match-eve training session and was unable to prove his fitness, compounding physical difficulties that also hampered him during the second Test in Gqeberha.

With Smith sidelined, Australia made four alterations to their playing XI for the Newlands clash. The visitors brought in Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Cooper Connolly, and Nathan Lyon. Matt Renshaw was set to open the batting alongside Travis Head, while Green stepped into the number four batting position to fill the void left by Smith.

During the play on the field, Australian bowlers Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Lyon labored through long spells. Cummins experienced a difficult stretch, going wicketless through an extended series of deliveries, which statistics broadcast on air noted as the longest wicketless period of his Test career.

South African batters Ryan Rickelton and Marco Jansen put together a productive partnership during the session. Rickelton weathered several short-pitched deliveries from the Australian pace attack, sustaining a minor cut to his left index finger that required medical attention before he resumed batting. Jansen also contributed crucial runs with aggressive shots against the fast bowlers.

As the third Test progresses at Newlands, both squads continue competing fiercely to claim the series victory in the World Test Championship fixture. The outcome of the match will determine the ultimate winner of the hard-fought three-match contest.
