Shedeur Sanders Briefly Replaces Deshaun Watson After Injury

Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Shedeur Sanders was thrust into action during the opening drive of Sunday's pivotal AFC North matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Starter Deshaun Watson took a high hit from Steelers safety Jaquan Brisker and remained on the ground before heading to the medical tent to be evaluated for a concussion.

Although Watson initially appeared to want to stay in the game, he was forced to the sideline, clearing the way for Sanders to take over under center. Both teams entered the contest with identical 5-2 records, with first place in the division hanging in the balance.

Sanders' introduction to the game was difficult as the offense faced immediate pressure and penalties. During his brief time on the field, he connected with tight end Harold Fannin on a short pass, but Fannin fumbled the ball, handing the Steelers favorable field position.

Watson was ultimately cleared by the concussion protocol and returned to the game before being stripped of the ball on his second play back, leading to an early Steelers score. Head coach Todd Monken had confirmed just two days prior that Sanders would serve as the primary backup to Watson for the Pittsburgh game.

The quarterback situation in Cleveland has been heavily discussed throughout the season. The team activated Dillon Gabriel from injured reserve after a back injury, and with rookie Taylen Green also on the roster, the Browns have carried four quarterbacks on their active list.

Sanders gained starting experience during his rookie campaign in 2025, posting a 3-4 record across seven starts while throwing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Watson's strong performances this season had relegated Sanders back to a reserve role.

While Watson has helped lead the Browns to a competitive start through his late-game heroics, his massive contract has drawn scrutiny from analysts and former players alike. Discussions surrounding the future of Cleveland's offense frequently involve Sanders as a potential long-term option if the franchise decides to pivot.
