Severe Storms Bring Hail and Weather Warnings Across South America
Recent severe weather systems have brought intense hail, localized flooding, and tornado warnings to multiple regions in Argentina and Chile.
Severe weather events have impacted various agricultural and urban regions across South America, bringing heavy rainfall, damaging hail, and atmospheric instability. In the southeastern part of Buenos Aires Province in Argentina, intense storms recently struck agricultural sectors in Balcarce and Lobería, leaving behind significant accumulations of hail alongside heavy downpours.
The worst of the Argentine storm was concentrated between the areas of Dos Naciones and Napaleofú, where precipitation reached up to 170 millimeters in certain spots. Social media footage showed hail piling up roughly ten inches high near local roadways. While some livestock facilities sustained damage, agricultural advisers noted that the broader wheat crop generally remains in fair condition, though technical experts are monitoring lingering challenges.
Beyond the immediate hail damage, agronomists in Argentina have expressed concern over a persistent lack of solar radiation during a critical developmental phase for wheat crops. Researchers reported that solar radiation levels in early October dropped significantly compared to previous years, largely due to extended cloudy days. This reduction in sunlight, combined with delayed vegetative growth, could potentially impact final crop yields if conditions do not normalize.
Meanwhile, further across the region, weather authorities in Chile issued formal warnings regarding the risk of tornadoes and waterspouts. The Meteorological Directorate of Chile warned that atmospheric instability would create favorable conditions for convective clouds with tornadic characteristics, bringing sudden gusty winds to the O’Higgins and Maule regions.
The Chilean meteorological service indicated that these areas could also experience normal to moderate rainfall alongside thunderstorms and hail. The advisory urged residents and local drivers to remain cautious and follow official updates from emergency management authorities as the unstable weather systems pass through.
In Argentina's Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, weather forecasting agencies reported potential early-morning fog and mist following recent heavy rains and localized flooding. High humidity levels combined with overnight temperature drops are expected to reduce visibility on regional highways and expressways, prompting safety recommendations for morning commuters before conditions stabilize into the weekend.
