Search Underway for Missing Woman in Southern France

A massive search operation involving law enforcement, specialized tracking units, and an emergency helicopter was launched in the southern region of France following the disappearance of a woman on Sunday, November 1.

The missing individual was identified as Jessica Da Encarnacao, a resident in her mid-forties. She reportedly vanished while gathering chestnuts alongside friends in a heavily forested and mountainous area located in the Hauts-Cantons region.

According to local authorities from the Hérault gendarmerie, the incident occurred specifically within the municipality of Taussac-la-Billière, near the hamlet of Maurian. Officials noted that the missing woman was unfamiliar with the rugged local terrain.

The search effort began on Sunday afternoon after she reportedly decided to turn back toward her vehicle around 2:30 PM. Relatives and authorities confirmed that she was not carrying a mobile phone at the time, increasing concerns about her safety as darkness approached in the unfamiliar wilderness.

Describing her appearance to aid the public, officials stated that she is approximately 1.70 meters tall. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing khaki cargo pants, a gray wool cardigan, and pink sneakers.

Throughout the initial response, specialized resources were deployed to comb the dense vegetation. These included a tracking dog from the departmental gendarmerie, another from local emergency services, and an aerial drone to scan the canopy from above.

The operation escalated on Monday with the deployment of a gendarmerie helicopter equipped with advanced thermal and technical cameras to assist ground searchers in the challenging landscape.

In addition to official resources, local authorities called upon the public for assistance. A citizen-led search party was organized to depart from the Maurian public square, and officials urged anyone with relevant information to contact the gendarmerie brigade in Bédarieux immediately.
