Samsung Lions and KIA Tigers Face Off in KBO Playoff Series
The 2026 KBO postseason kicks off with a high-stakes series between second-seeded Samsung and third-seeded KIA, though rain delayed the opening game.
The 2026 KBO postseason features a high-stakes playoff series between the Samsung Lions and the KIA Tigers as both teams battle for a spot in the Korean Series. The best-of-five series opened its matchup following KIA's sweep of the LG Twins in the wild-card round, advancing them to face regular-season runner-up Samsung. In their head-to-head regular-season meetings, KIA held a slight advantage with nine wins to Samsung's seven.
The opening game of the series, originally scheduled for Sunday at the Samsung Lions Park in Daegu, was postponed due to continuous rain from a typhoon affecting the southern region. The Korea Baseball Organization announced the rainout, rescheduling the first game for Monday. Both teams retained their initial pitching rotations, with Chris Paddake slated for Samsung and James Neal for KIA.
The weather delay brought different tactical implications for both franchises. For Samsung, which had been idle for nearly two weeks following the conclusion of the regular season, the unexpected rest provided more time for outfielder Koo Ja-wook to recover from a hamstring injury. Conversely, KIA benefited from an extra day of rest after wrapping up their previous series in three straight games, keeping their momentum sharp.
Both managers expressed confidence as their teams prepared for the clash. Samsung manager Park Jin-man noted that his squad plans to meet KIA's formidable batting lineup head-on. "Our players also have power, and I believe that going head-to-head with power will surely yield good results," Park said regarding their approach to containing KIA's standout hitter, Kim Do-young.
Kim enters the series carrying immense momentum from the wild-card round, where he hit three home runs and drove in eight runs to earn series MVP honors. Samsung's pitching staff, anchored by foreign aces Paddake and Ariel Jurado, faces the critical task of neutralizing Kim and the rest of the potent KIA offense in hitter-friendly ballparks.
On the other side, KIA relies on a formidable pitching tandem of James Neal and Adam Oller, who proved their dominance by allowing only three runs across 13 combined innings in the previous round. Both pitchers finished the regular season among the league leaders in innings pitched and earned run averages, giving the Tigers strong depth on the mound.
Ticket sales for the series have been structured by venue, with games alternating between Daegu and Gwangju. Online purchases are handled through designated ticketing platforms, and strict purchase limits apply per person. Additional on-site ticket options remain available for elderly fans, individuals with disabilities, and foreign visitors meeting specific verification requirements.
