Meleek Thomas made a memorable entrance into professional basketball on Monday night, scoring 16 points in his NBA debut to help the Cleveland Cavaliers secure a thrilling 127-125 overtime victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves. After missing the floor in Cleveland's first two games of the season due to matchup considerations, the 20-year-old rookie guard seized his opportunity when head coach Kenny Atkinson called his number in the first quarter.

Drafted 34th overall in June's NBA Draft out of Arkansas, Thomas logged 19 minutes off the bench and provided an immediate spark. He finished 6 of 10 from the field, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc, while adding two rebounds and one steal. His 16-point performance marked the second-most points by a Cavaliers rookie in their debut coming off the bench, trailing only Brevin Knight's 18-point outing in 1997.

Reflecting on his standout performance, Thomas expressed gratitude for staying prepared. "It was on my mind I was going to be on my best version. Have a great showing, stand out and make sure people leaving the gym know my name," Thomas said. He added that the milestone felt like everything he expected, noting that a star cannot be kept in the closet.

The rookie's aggressive play caught the attention of veteran teammates and coaching staff alike. All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell praised Thomas for stepping up when the team needed a third ball handler to relieve pressure from himself and James Harden. Mitchell noted that it is rare for a rookie to serve as the offensive catalyst in their very first appearance, highlighting Thomas's fearless attitude and unexpected defensive attention to detail.

Coach Atkinson explained that Thomas did not play in the opening games against Philadelphia and Brooklyn due to specific matchups, but the team needed additional playmaking against Minnesota. "In this league, you have to do it over and over. Since the day we drafted him we were bullish on him," Atkinson said.

Cleveland's victory required a significant comeback, as the Cavaliers trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half before erasing the deficit in the third quarter and ultimately prevailing in the extra period. Donovan Mitchell led the charge for Cleveland with 25 points, while James Harden contributed 19 points and nine assists, including clutch free throws down the stretch. Evan Mobley added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

On the opposing side, Anthony Edwards delivered a massive performance for Minnesota, scoring a season-high 47 points and hitting a tying three-pointer at the buzzer of regulation. Rudy Gobert chipped in with an unusual stat line of 20 rebounds despite missing all nine of his field-goal attempts. However, Mitchell's midrange jumper with 48 seconds remaining in overtime and steady free-throw shooting preserved the win for Cleveland, handing Minnesota its first loss of the young season.
