Minnesota Timberwolves Defeat Orlando Magic 115-93
The Timberwolves dominated the boards and maintained an early lead to hand the Magic their second loss of the season.
The Minnesota Timberwolves secured a decisive 115-93 victory over the Orlando Magic at the Kia Center on Friday night. The win moved Minnesota to a 2-0 record to start the season, while the Orlando Magic fell to 0-2 under new head coach Sean Sweeney.
Minnesota never trailed during the contest, establishing control early and pulling away in the third quarter by outscoring the Magic 29-15. This surge allowed Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch to rest his starters, including LaMelo Ball, for the majority of the fourth quarter.
The Timberwolves found success through a balanced offensive effort, with six players scoring in double figures. Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels led the team with 15 points each, while Rudy Gobert contributed 14 points and nine rebounds. Despite a difficult shooting night where he missed 10 consecutive field goals after an opening three-pointer, Edwards finished the game with 15 points.
Orlando struggled significantly with shooting and ball security throughout the night. The team shot only 20.5% from beyond the arc, finishing 8-for-39 from three-point range. Additionally, the Magic committed 16 turnovers and missed eight free throws. Wendell Carter Jr. led Orlando with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Franz Wagner added 18 points despite a challenging performance from distance.
A major factor in the outcome was Minnesota's dominance on the glass. The Timberwolves outrebounded the Magic 60-43, including a 21-8 advantage on offensive rebounds. This rebounding edge provided Minnesota with 17 second-chance points, while Orlando failed to secure an offensive rebound during the first 19 minutes of play.
The Magic faced further adversity when forward Paolo Banchero exited the game in the third quarter after landing awkwardly on his right ankle. Although he briefly returned to the bench, he did not play in the fourth quarter and was later listed as doubtful to return due to soreness. The team was already playing without Anthony Black, who is sidelined with a right ankle sprain.
Following this loss, the Orlando Magic are scheduled to travel to New York to face the Knicks on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves will return home to host the Toronto Raptors on Sunday as they look to continue their undefeated start to the season.
