Romano Benito Floriani Mussolini scored his first Serie A goal on Tuesday, helping Lazio secure a commanding 6-2 victory away against Sassuolo. The 23-year-old right-back found the net in the 16th minute at Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia, giving his squad a 3-1 lead in the ninth round of the Italian league season. The lopsided result propelled Lazio to the top of the Serie A standings with 25 points, maintaining an unbeaten run of eight victories and one draw.

The breakthrough moment required video review after initial hesitation from match officials. Floriani Mussolini capitalized on a cross delivered from the wing by Kenneth Taylor. The ball traveled across the penalty area, avoiding both Mattia Zaccagni and Tijjani Noslin, before the defender slid in to beat Sassuolo goalkeeper Stefano Turati. While the goal was initially disallowed for an offside infraction, a VAR review confirmed that neither teammate had interfered with the sequence, allowing the strike to stand.

The contest tilted even further in Lazio's favor prior to the break. Sassuolo midfielder Kristian Thorstvedt was sent off with a direct red card in the 30th minute following a severe challenge, forcing the hosts to navigate the remainder of the fixture with ten players. Floriani Mussolini concluded his performance just after the hour mark when he was substituted off in the 62nd minute. Sassuolo subsequently brought on Sebastian Walukiewicz in the 82nd minute, but the hosts could not halt Lazio's dominant offensive display.

Led by manager Gennaro Gattuso, Lazio now holds a three-point cushion over second-place Inter Milan, who travel to face Venezia on Wednesday. The coach's tactical system has granted substantial freedom to his outside defenders, empowering them to press high up the pitch while demanding relentless focus and commitment across the entire 90 minutes.

Speaking to DAZN after the final whistle, Floriani Mussolini dedicated the milestone to the visiting fans who traveled to Reggio Emilia. 'First goal with Lazio? Truly an incredible thing, it meant so much to me, look at the spectacle of our fans, it felt like being at home. I'm happy for them and for the victory,' he said. He described the moment as an expression of gratitude for the support, explaining that Gattuso expects the roster to perform at 110 percent intensity rather than settling for less.

The defender also addressed the technical and tactical growth required to sustain his place in Italy's top division. He acknowledged having considerable room for development, particularly when opponents attack him in wide areas. 'I have a lot of room for improvement, I need to move faster when they take me on, but I work day after day, I try to follow the coach, and I will smooth out these details,' he remarked, emphasizing that maintaining defensive concentration is crucial in long, demanding fixtures.

Floriani Mussolini's ascent in Italian soccer has regularly drawn public attention due to his prominent lineage. He is the son of actress and political figure Alessandra Mussolini, the grandson of jazz pianist Romano Mussolini, and the great-grandson of Benito Mussolini, the fascist dictator who governed Italy from 1922 to 1943. Legendary cinema icon Sophia Loren is also his great-aunt.

Before breaking into Lazio's senior squad, the right-back developed in the youth ranks of city rival AS Roma before transferring to Lazio in 2016. To gain match experience, he completed loan spells with lower-tier clubs Juve Stabia and Cremonese before returning to Rome. Throughout his emergence, Floriani Mussolini has sought to keep his athletic career distinct from his family's historical ties, noting in a 2024 interview that his professional focus remains strictly centered on soccer.
