Road Closures and Traffic Disruptions Affect Major Highways in the Loire Region

Essential maintenance and repair work are prompting overnight closures across several key regional routes, including portions of the A72.

Motorists traveling through the Loire region of France are facing significant overnight travel disruptions this week due to a series of scheduled highway closures and infrastructure maintenance projects. Transportation authorities have implemented temporary restrictions on heavily traveled routes, including the A72, A47, A89, and the RN88, to accommodate ongoing safety upgrades and structural repairs.

Along the crucial junction connecting the RN88, RN488, and the A72 near Saint-Étienne, continued improvement work on the Terrenoire viaduct has necessitated multiple overnight lane and roadway closures. The RN88 heading toward Le Puy-en-Velay is scheduled to close from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Similarly, sections of the A72 heading toward Haute-Loire will experience closures at the interchange with the RN488 during the night hours on both Monday and Wednesday.

Traffic heading toward Lyon is also impacted by the infrastructure efforts. Authorities confirmed that circulation on the RN88 at the A72 interchange will be halted overnight on Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile, further north in the Forez plain near Nervieux and Balbigny, maintenance work on a winter maintenance gantry at the bifurcation of the A72 and the A89 will lead to a temporary nighttime closure of the A89 access ramp from Lyon toward Clermont-Ferrand on Wednesday night, with official detours put in place.

Additional disruptions are underway on the A47, where improvement projects at the Sardon interchange in Rive-de-Gier are requiring nightly highway closures between the Sardon and La Madeleine interchanges. Furthermore, daytime lane neutralizations on the RN88 at Saint-Chamond are affecting drivers during morning and afternoon hours. These widespread measures follow a period of local demonstrations that previously caused partial blockages along the A72.

While nighttime construction is designed to minimize overall congestion during peak commuting hours, drivers are advised to plan alternative routes and allow extra travel time when navigating the region this week. Local transport agencies continue to update advisories as the infrastructure projects progress toward completion.
