Reddit Reports Strong Third-Quarter Revenue but Shares Fall on Outlook

The social media platform exceeded Wall Street expectations for the third quarter, yet its fourth-quarter guidance failed to impress investors.

Reddit reported a 53 percent increase in third-quarter revenue, reaching $895 million and surpassing Wall Street projections, even as its domestic user base experienced a slight decline. Chief Executive Officer Steve Huffman highlighted the unique value of the platform, noting that the company surpassed $3 billion in revenue over the last 12 months.

Despite beating consensus estimates for both top-line revenue and earnings per share, Reddit shares tumbled in extended trading. The market reaction was driven primarily by fourth-quarter revenue guidance, which management pegged at a midpoint of $1.02 billion or a range of $1 billion to $1.03 billion, falling short of analysts' expectations.

During the third quarter, Reddit's U.S. daily active unique visitors dropped 2 percent year over year to 50.7 million. All of the platform's user growth stemmed from international markets, meaning domestic expansion relied entirely on generating higher revenue from existing users rather than acquiring new ones.

U.S. average revenue per unique user climbed 53 percent to $13.82, driving a 50 percent increase in domestic revenue despite the smaller audience. However, analysts and market observers point out that relying solely on increased monetization has natural limits if user acquisition continues to stall in its most valuable market.

The company's net income rose 74 percent to $283 million, and its GAAP profit of $1.40 per share outperformed consensus estimates by 5.6 percent. Operating margins and free cash flow margins also showed substantial year-over-year improvements, reflecting disciplined cost management where total expenses grew at a slower pace than revenue.

Reddit makes its money primarily through interest-based advertising communities and content licensing agreements with artificial intelligence developers. While leadership remains confident in the distinct appeal of its platform, investors continue to weigh whether monetization levers and international expansion can fully offset domestic user stagnation moving forward.
