Recent Sports Updates and Coastal City Fire Responses
A roundup of recent developments including NFL highlights, high school football playoffs, and an industrial fire in Oregon.
In NFL action, Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt exited the field late in the second quarter due to an ankle injury during a matchup against the Detroit Lions. Wyatt, who previously suffered a fibula fracture and ankle ligament tear against the Lions in Week 13 of last year, walked to the locker room before halftime. However, he managed to return to the sidelines for the start of the second half and re-entered the game.
Meanwhile, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix delivered a notable performance in Week 7 against the Arizona Cardinals, breaking away for a 62-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter. The explosive play marked the longest touchdown run by an NFL quarterback since Justin Fields recorded a 67-yard scoring run against the Detroit Lions in November 2022. While the league record remains Terrelle Pryor's 93-yard touchdown run in 2013, Nix's run provided a significant offensive spark for Denver.
In high school football, running back EJ Kuhlman led the Lyons team to a 36-14 Class 8A opening-round victory over visiting Metea Valley. Kuhlman carried the ball 14 times for 197 yards, scoring on runs of 44, 40, and 32 yards, in addition to catching a 26-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brendan McCabe. Coach Jon Beutjer praised Kuhlman's explosiveness and patience, while also crediting the offensive line for creating running lanes.
The Lyons victory advances the team to a matchup against Perspectives. Sophomore running back Jack Williams also contributed significantly to the winning effort, adding 94 yards on 12 carries, which included an 82-yard touchdown run.
In other news, a coastal city in Oregon issued a mandatory evacuation order following a fire that broke out at a seafood processing plant on Sunday morning. The City of Newport instructed residents and visitors within a one-mile radius of the Pacific Seafood facility to stay indoors, wear masks outside, and relocate to an established shelter at a local church.
City officials raised concerns that the smoke from the facility might contain harmful levels of ammonia, a colorless gas with a sharp odor that can irritate the skin, eyes, and throat. Public information officer John Fuller reported that the cause of the fire remains under investigation and no injuries have been reported.
The Pacific Seafood plant is located along Yaquina Bay near a dock where local sea lions frequently gather. While human residents monitored wind directions and evacuation routes, local observers noted that the nearby sea lions remained unbothered by the thick smoke and continued barking as usual.
