Real Madrid has emerged as the frontrunner to sign Manchester United academy standout JJ Gabriel, with reports indicating that a verbal agreement is in place between the Spanish club and the 16-year-old player. The teenager, who has been widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in Europe, has not trained with Manchester United since September, opting instead to work independently in Spain.

The situation surrounding the forward's departure from Old Trafford began to unfold in mid-September. Although Gabriel was expected to make his senior debut during a Carabao Cup match against Brighton and Hove Albion, he ultimately walked away from the club. Reports suggest that his representatives sought specific guarantees regarding playing time before committing to a scholarship deal, leading to an impasse with Manchester United officials.

While clubs such as Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich were linked to the youngster, Real Madrid appears to have secured the most favorable position. Sources indicate that Madrid is prepared to pay a required compensation fee, estimated by various reports to be approximately £8.5 million, to finalize the transfer. This financial commitment distinguishes them from other interested parties who have not advanced their negotiations to the same extent.

The player’s ability to move internationally has been bolstered by his possession of a European Union passport, which simplifies the regulatory requirements for a transfer outside of England. Because he is a minor, the move remains subject to final administrative clearance from FIFA. Once the governing body confirms the compensation package owed to Manchester United, the transfer can be officially completed, likely in January.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has previously emphasized the need to handle the delicate situation with care, focusing on the welfare and development of the young athlete. Former United captain Wayne Rooney, who observed Gabriel’s development alongside his own son in the club's youth ranks, noted that the departure was not entirely unexpected, citing the player's long-standing desire to compete in Spain.

As the process nears its conclusion, observers note that Real Madrid is making efforts to maintain a respectful relationship with Manchester United throughout the transition. While the deal is not yet finalized, the consensus among industry experts is that the move to the Spanish capital is the most probable outcome for the young forward, who was named the Premier League's Under-18 player of the season last year at just 14 years old.
