Real Kashmir to Face Debutants Nagaland United in IFL Season Opener
The 2026-27 Indian Football League campaign kicks off in Srinagar as Real Kashmir hosts newcomer Nagaland United SC.
The 2026-27 season of the Indian Football League is scheduled to kick off on Friday at the TRC Stadium in Srinagar, featuring an opening match between former champions Real Kashmir FC and competition debutants Nagaland United SC. The fixture, set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time, marks a historic milestone as Nagaland United becomes the first club from Nagaland to compete on the national football stage, ending a 78-year wait for state representation in the league.
Founded in 2024 in Chümoukedima, Nagaland United secured its place in the second-tier national competition following a goodwill agreement with Aizawl FC. The All India Football Federation approved the arrangement on September 9, allowing the newly established club to acquire Aizawl's sporting rights for the league. This transition follows a rich football heritage in the region, tracing back to Talimeren Ao, independent India's first football captain who led the nation barefoot at the 1948 London Olympics.
For Nagaland United, the debut represents an opportunity to establish an identity through competitive and disciplined play. Head coach Kaizad Ambapardiwalla expressed confidence in his squad despite the short preparation time. "Our preparation for tomorrow’s game is going well, and the team is in a positive mindset," Ambapardiwalla stated. "Despite having limited time, our main focus during training has been on discipline, the right attitude and developing a winning mentality."
The squad will be captained by defender Rohmingthanga, who brings previous I-League experience from his time with Aizawl FC. Nineteen-year-old defender Thejangulie Zatsu noted that the milestone carries deep significance for local athletes. "For me, it’s more than just playing at a higher level: it’s an opportunity to give back to the club that gave me my start, represent my state with pride, and hopefully inspire the young players back home to believe that their dreams, too, are possible," Zatsu remarked.
On the opposing side, Real Kashmir enters the home fixture looking to build on a resilient finish to the previous season. After struggling in the initial phase of the 2025-26 campaign and slipping into the relegation round, the Snow Leopards recovered under head coach Ishfaq Ahmed, securing three consecutive victories to top the relegation group and retain their league status.
Real Kashmir has added significant depth to its roster for the new campaign, welcoming 13 new signings including experienced striker Marcus Joseph and players with prior success in the league, such as Susnata Malick and Mohit Mittal. Meanwhile, the team parted ways with former captain Mohammad Inam, who transferred to Indian Super League side Punjab FC. Head coach Ishfaq acknowledged the threat posed by the newcomers while emphasizing his squad's readiness.
"The players are the same ones who were at Aizawl FC, so we know most of them, but a completely new coach has taken over with a new style," Ishfaq noted regarding their opponents. "At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter, we want to play good, aggressive football at home, and we are ready for that."
The 2026-27 IFL campaign features 11 teams competing for promotion to the Indian Super League. Alongside Nagaland United, Bengaluru United and Samaleswari SC are making their league debuts, joined by Mohammedan SC following their relegation from the top tier. Friday's match will be broadcast live on television via DD Sports and streamed across platforms including YouTube, Waves OTT, and Z5.
