Raptors Rout Bulls 135-92 in Season Opener as Kawhi Leonard Returns
Kawhi Leonard, Scottie Barnes, and Immanuel Quickley each scored 23 points to lead Toronto to a dominant victory over Chicago.
The Toronto Raptors opened their season in dominant fashion on Wednesday night, defeating the Chicago Bulls 135-92 at the Scotiabank Arena. Led by strong performances from Kawhi Leonard, Scottie Barnes, and Immanuel Quickley, the Raptors never trailed and secured the largest margin of victory in a season opener in franchise history.
Leonard, playing in his first regular-season game for Toronto since helping the franchise win its first NBA championship in 2019, scored 23 points in his return. He shot 5 for 17 from the field, including 2 of 6 from 3-point range, and went a perfect 11 for 11 at the free-throw line while adding six rebounds and four steals in 24 minutes.
He shared the team-high scoring honors with Barnes and Quickley, who also contributed 23 points apiece. Quickley added seven assists and connected on four shots from beyond the arc, while Barnes chipped in six rebounds and five assists. RJ Barrett rounded out the primary scorers with 20 points for the home side.
The tone of the game was set early when Toronto erupted for 43 points in the first quarter, nearly matching Chicago's entire 44-point output for the first half. Quickley was especially lethal early on, scoring 14 points in the opening twelve minutes to help build a commanding 43-23 lead by the end of the first period.
Chicago struggled mightily on both ends of the floor, committing 27 turnovers that the Raptors converted into 35 points. The visitors also had a difficult shooting night, going just 4 for 36 from 3-point range. Matas Buzelis led the Bulls with 17 points, while rookie Caleb Wilson added 16 points in his NBA debut.
Toronto's suffocating defense and transition game overwhelmed the Chicago lineup, extending the lead to as many as 48 points before the final buzzer. The comfortable cushion allowed the coaching staff to limit the playing time of key starters as the game concluded.
With the 1-0 start in the books, the Raptors turn their attention to an upcoming matchup against the Washington Wizards on Friday. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls will look to rebound when they travel to face the Milwaukee Bucks on the same night.
