Rail Worker Killed in High-Speed Train Accident in Essen
Another worker sustained serious injuries after a group of railway employees was struck by an Intercity Express train in western Germany.
A railway worker was killed and another was seriously injured late Sunday after being struck by a high-speed train in the western German city of Essen, according to local fire authorities. The tragic incident occurred while a crew of six employees was performing maintenance work along a section of tracks operated by the national rail company, Deutsche Bahn.
Emergency personnel arrived at the scene promptly, pronouncing one worker dead upon arrival. The second injured worker was safely rescued from the tracks with the assistance of a turntable ladder before being transported to a hospital for urgent medical care. First responders also deployed a police helicopter and emergency chaplains to support the operation, which lasted approximately two hours.
Authorities stated that the exact circumstances surrounding how the accident happened remain unclear. Investigations into the collision are currently ongoing to determine the cause of the tragedy on the Deutsche Bahn rail line.
In a separate development concerning business and retail in the region, Germany's federal competition authority, the Bundeskartellamt, recently approved the acquisition of six DIY stores from the insolvent Hellweg group by Hornbach Baumarkt. The clearance affects branches located in Ahrensfelde, Berlin-Köpenick, Dortmund-Kley, Freiberg, St Augustin, and the Essen-Borbeck neighborhood.
The Hellweg group, alongside its BayWa Bau & Garten brands owned by the Semer family, operated 113 DIY stores and garden centers across Germany before entering insolvency proceedings under self-administration in June. The antitrust regulator utilized customer loyalty card data and shopper surveys to review the transaction, ultimately concluding that the purchase does not raise competition concerns.
Bundeskartellamt President Andreas Mundt noted that shoppers retain plenty of alternative retail options in the vicinity of each affected store. "The merger does not give rise to competition concerns," Mundt stated, adding that customers have sufficient alternative specialty stores available nearby.
Meanwhile, on the sports front, the women's soccer team of Borussia Dortmund secured a narrow 1-0 victory against SGS Essen in autumnal conditions at the Rote Erde Stadium. Dortmund captain Alex Popp scored the lone goal of the match in the first half following a cross from Annika Enderle, maintaining the team's winning streak in front of 3,083 spectators.
