Amazon's Prime Video has officially renewed Mike Flanagan's horror television series adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel Carrie for a second season. The first season, which consists of eight episodes, concluded its run after introducing notable alterations to the source material's infamous climax.

Starring Summer H. Howell as the telekinetic teenager Carrietta White, the first season reimagined the iconic story of isolation, bullying, and supernatural terror. Unlike the original 1974 novel, the adaptation's finale featured major plot departures, including Carrie surviving the destructive events of prom night and character Emaline taking control of Carrie's abilities.

These substantial changes elicited a mixed response from viewers and critics upon the release of the series finale. However, in an interview with The Direct, Howell defended the creative direction and noted that the upcoming episodes will justify the narrative choices.

"We were always making something different with our version of Carrie, and we get to explore the TK gene a bit and all these other special women," Howell stated. She added that the second season will address lingering questions about Emaline, portrayed by Thalia Dudek, and urged audiences to wait to see why the showrunner chose this path.

With the first season having adapted the entirety of Stephen King's original novel, the newly greenlit second season has the freedom to chart an entirely original course. While Prime Video has not yet announced an official release date for the second installment, speculation places its potential arrival sometime in 2027 or 2028.

The upcoming episodes are expected to explore various unresolved storylines, including the mysterious organization connected to Emaline and individuals possessing similar supernatural traits. Furthermore, the narrative may delve into Carrie learning to control her powers and navigating the lingering threats of those looking to exploit her abilities following her mother Margaret's death.

The complete main cast of the first season features Summer H. Howell alongside Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
