Powerful 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Remote Region in China's Tibet
Authorities are currently assessing the impact after a shallow earthquake shook a mountainous area in Tibet late Thursday night.
A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck a remote and mountainous region in China's Tibet autonomous region late Thursday night, prompting emergency responses and shaking local communities. The tremor occurred at approximately 10:33 p.m. local time on October 22, 2026, catching families off guard as they prepared for the evening or got children ready for bed.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the earthquake was extremely shallow. While the CENC estimated the depth at 10 kilometers, the USGS placed it at roughly 18 kilometers. The epicenter was located in a mountainous area within the Nagqu prefecture, roughly 390 to 400 kilometers northeast of the regional capital, Lhasa, at an average altitude of nearly 4,864 meters above sea level.
Following the initial tremor, seismic activity continued in the area. Approximately 39 minutes after the main shock, a secondary earthquake measuring a magnitude of 5.2 struck roughly 10 kilometers away from the original epicenter. The USGS estimated that the primary earthquake reached an intensity level of VIII on its instrumental intensity scale, indicating severe shaking near the focal point.
State media reported that the China Seismological Bureau activated a level-II emergency response shortly after the event. Initial international reports from agencies like Reuters and Associated Press indicated no immediate confirmed casualties or widespread structural damages, though assessing the area remains challenging due to the rugged terrain and high altitude.
The USGS placed an orange significant alert level for the region, warning that the shaking could trigger landslides and that localized disasters or fatalities might occur. Videos shared on social media by local users captured store interiors being evacuated and roads trembling during the height of the nighttime tremor.
Seismic events are relatively frequent in the region due to the continuous collision and convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, a geological process responsible for forming the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. The area previously experienced a deadly earthquake in January 2025 in the rural district of Tingri, which resulted in at least 126 fatalities.
Meanwhile, separate seismic recovery efforts continue internationally. In Panama, health authorities confirmed a second fatality related to a separate 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck that country on October 9, after a 60-year-old administrative worker succumbed to severe head injuries sustained during a school evacuation.
