FC Porto earned a spot in the Portuguese League Cup semifinals on Wednesday night with a 1-0 quarterfinal victory over Académico de Viseu at the Estádio do Dragão. Forward Santiago Giménez scored the lone goal of the contest right before halftime from the penalty spot, sending Francesco Farioli's side through to the competition's final four alongside Sporting CP while they await their next opponent.

Facing a compressed schedule, Farioli altered his entire starting lineup compared to the team's previous league victory in Barcelos. The Italian manager shifted Porto into an unfamiliar 3-4-1-2 setup, awarding a starting debut to English defender Chris Smalling alongside maiden starts for young prospects Souza and Dominik Prpić, as well as a senior debut for Gabriel Mec. Académico de Viseu manager Bruno Pinheiro took a similar approach, implementing nine changes to his squad just days after securing a 2-1 away victory against Sporting CP at the Alvalade.

Smalling's much-anticipated starting debut came to an abrupt and disappointing end early in the second half. After picking up a yellow card in the 15th minute for a heavy tackle, the central defender went down holding his knee in the 52nd minute and was substituted for Pablo Rosario shortly afterward. Following the match, Farioli confirmed that the defender had suffered a knee issue and would undergo medical evaluation the following day to determine the extent of the damage.

The visitors showed no intimidation in the opening stages, testing Porto's defensive structure with attempts from Soufiane Messeguem, André Ceitil, and Valery Fernández. However, Porto gradually found their footing through Giménez, who hit the post in the 26th minute after an attacking surge from Souza. Giménez and Alan Varela both threatened again from distance before the deadlock was finally broken at the 45-minute mark.

The decisive moment arrived when a cross from Porto right-back Martim Fernandes prompted Académico de Viseu goalkeeper Juan Soriano to punch the ball clear, inadvertently sending it into the arm of defender Hugo Gambor inside the penalty box. Referee Sérgio Guelho awarded the penalty, which was quickly upheld by video assistant referee Manuel de Oliveira. Giménez calmly stepped up and buried the shot into the net to give the hosts a lead heading into the break.

The decision later drew sharp scrutiny from television sports analyst Vítor Pinto, who criticized Guelho's viewing angle and questioned the rapid review process conducted by the replay booth, arguing that officials rushed the judgment. Pinheiro also expressed frustration following the final whistle, stating that the match swung on pure misfortune when the goalkeeper deflected the ball into a teammate's arm, while adding that his players proved they could fiercely compete against top-flight opposition.

Porto pushed to expand their lead throughout the second half, earning five corners in a three-minute span shortly after the restart. Soriano kept the visitors within striking distance by delivering multiple stellar saves, denying a close-range header from Fernandes in the 74th minute and blocking later attempts from Giménez and Hwang In-beom. Académico de Viseu generated their own chance to equalize in the 65th minute when André Clóvis capitalized on an errant backpass, but Porto goalkeeper Cláudio Ramos intervened to preserve the clean sheet.

The match was also marked by a distinctive atmosphere inside the Estádio do Dragão, as disciplinary sanctions had closed the stands usually occupied by Porto's organized supporters groups following incidents in a prior derby. Members of the Coletivo Ultras 95 relocated to a different section of the stadium, displaying banners protesting the governing body's ruling while the club introduced a new light and sound display. Porto now turns its attention to the upcoming Final Four in January, while Académico de Viseu redirects its focus toward their league campaign.
