Point of Law Wins Melbourne Cup at Flemington
The three-year-old horse secured victory in the grueling 3,200-meter race on Tuesday under jockey Ethan Brown.
The short-priced favorite Point of Law surged to victory in the A$10 million Melbourne Cup on Tuesday at Flemington Racecourse, delivering jockey Ethan Brown his first win in Australia's historic event. The three-year-old contender, previously owned by King Charles, finished ahead of runners-up Zahrann and Juja Kibo to claim the prestigious handicap.
All three podium finishers were trained by Ciaron Maher, who celebrated a remarkable trifecta achievement. Maher fielded an unprecedented seven horses in the 2,300-meter-wide race and expressed immense pride in his team's performance following the sweep.
Ethan Brown shared his excitement after crossing the finish line, describing the victory as an amazing feeling after facing a bumpy road with multiple challenges. Brown praised his horse's acceleration, stating that once the runner found clear space, his turn of foot was enormous.
The race began on a soft track following overnight rain, with Maher's stablemate Royal Supremacy establishing an early and commanding lead. Royal Supremacy pushed far ahead of the 23-horse field before fading down the home stretch, ultimately finishing in fifth place.
Several jockeys remarked on the unusual pacing of the race, noting that the slow tempo and sudden shifts created tactical challenges for the backmarkers. Despite the tactical nature of the event, the leading contenders managed to navigate the field during the closing stages.
Vauban finished in last place, while Asterix was scratched prior to the start after stewards discovered a prohibited muscle strain medication. The Melbourne Cup continues to be a major public holiday and sporting highlight in the state of Victoria since its inception in 1861.
