Podemos Senate Candidacy in Leon Blocked Ahead of Upcoming Election
An administrative error involving a substitute candidate forces Podemos off the Senate ballot in the Spanish province of Leon.
Voters heading to the polls in the Spanish province of Leon on November 29, 2026, for the general election will face a modified ballot after the exclusion of the Podemos candidacy for the Senate. The definitive proclamation of political party candidates, published by the provincial authorities, revealed that the party's list for the upper house of the Spanish parliament was ultimately not accepted.
The electoral board ruled against the submission following complications regarding the documentation of María del Carmen Durán, the first substitute for the number two candidate, Modesto Ramos. According to sources from Podemos who spoke to the EFE news agency, the inability to retain this candidate meant the list failed to meet mandatory parity regulations. Legal services for the party are currently reviewing options to appeal the decision.
Initially, Podemos had put forward a slate for the upper chamber led by Edith Peña Domínguez, Modesto Ramos Maraña, and Ariana Alonso Celorio. With their exclusion, the political landscape for the upper house shifts, leaving the coalition known as Senado de Progreso as the primary left-wing option with viable prospects for securing seats.
Senado de Progreso unites the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and Frente Amplio, a coalition composed of United Left (Izquierda Unida) and Sumar. The joint Senate ticket is headed by Salvador Vidal Varela, seeking a third consecutive term, followed by Laura Fernández Bermejo and Manuel Alfonso González. Additional parties running candidates for the upper house include the Popular Party (PP), Vox, the Regionalist Party of the Leonese Country (Prepal), the Animalist Party with the Environment (PACMA), the Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE), and Blank Seats.
The adjustment to the ballot also affects another formation, Por un Mundo Más Justo, which failed to secure final approval for its lists in either the Congress of Deputies or the Senate. These removals reduce the total number of Senate candidate lists from nine to seven, while the lower house candidate lists drop from 13 to 12.
Despite the Senate setback, Podemos maintains its independent candidacy for the lower house, the Congress of Deputies, with Sixto Martínez Álvarez leading that particular list. A total of 425,983 eligible voters in Leon are registered to participate in the upcoming general election to select their parliamentary representatives.
