The Philadelphia 76ers opened their NBA season with a statement win on Tuesday night, defeating the defending champion New York Knicks 106-100 at Madison Square Garden. Tyrese Maxey paced the visiting squad with a game-high 28 points, helping his team overcome a slow start and signal that they are ready to contend for the title.

Philadelphia entered the new campaign drawing immense attention across the league after a transformative offseason. The franchise added superstar Jaylen Brown via a trade from the Boston Celtics and signed veteran leader LeBron James, who officially commenced an NBA-record 24th season. Paired with Maxey, Joel Embiid, and second-year guard VJ Edgecombe, the Sixers deployed a star-studded lineup that faced immediate questions about how quickly they could coalesce.

The early stages of the game favored the hosts, as the Knicks raised their championship banner and received their rings in a pregame ceremony. New York capitalized on Philadelphia's first-half shooting struggles to build a lead. The Sixers converted just three of their 13 attempts from beyond the arc in the first two quarters and fell behind on the glass, allowing the Knicks to take a 58-54 advantage into halftime.

However, the visitors shifted the momentum after the intermission through relentless defense and improved rebounding. Philadelphia limited New York to just two offensive rebounds in the third quarter, turning defensive stops into transition opportunities. The Sixers closed the period on an 11-2 run, capped by a buzzer-beating fadeaway three-pointer from Brown off an Embiid screen, giving them an 83-76 lead heading into the final frame.

The Knicks attempted a late comeback in the fourth quarter, narrowing the deficit to a single point when Karl-Anthony Towns connected from distance to make it 96-95. The Sixers immediately responded with clutch execution and a crucial three-pointer from Embiid to maintain their advantage. Maxey added a key three-point play early in the period, and the team committed zero turnovers down the stretch to secure the victory.

"We executed at a high level. Didn't turn the ball down the stretch. Got good looks, I think, every single trip down," Maxey said regarding the team's fourth-quarter poise. He also praised the competitive drive of his teammates, adding, "This group is very competitive. I've been saying it all training camp and you saw it tonight. You could tell the guys don't like losing."

Brown contributed 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in his debut for Philadelphia, while James recorded 14 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Embiid finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, three blocks, and two steals, anchoring a defensive effort that held the Knicks to 37% shooting from the field.

Following the opening-night victory, the 76ers return home to host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night. Meanwhile, the Knicks will look to rebound when they visit the Boston Celtics on Friday night.
