Knicks Host Magic at Madison Square Garden Looking for First Win
Both New York and Orlando enter Sunday's matchup seeking to turn around early-season struggles.
The New York Knicks and the Orlando Magic face off on Sunday evening at Madison Square Garden in an early-season matchup featuring two teams looking to find their footing. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET, with local television broadcasts and NBA League Pass carrying the action live from midtown Manhattan.
Both squads enter the contest searching for consistency after rocky starts to the campaign. The Knicks are currently sitting at an 0-2 record following losses to the Philadelphia 76ers and the Boston Celtics, where late-game defensive lapses proved costly. Meanwhile, the Magic travel to New York also trying to rebound, having dropped home games to Atlanta and Minnesota while dealing with early defensive and rebounding concerns.
Orlando will have to navigate a significant absence as forward Paolo Banchero is sidelined for the next few weeks due to a right low-grade high ankle sprain. With Banchero out, Franz Wagner is expected to step up as the primary offensive focal point for the Magic. In addition, Orlando hopes sixth man Anthony Black might be able to return to action after missing the first two games with an ankle sprain.
The Knicks boast a strong regular-season home presence, having gone 30-10 at Madison Square Garden last season alongside a 7-2 postseason run. However, New York's star trio of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Mikal Bridges struggled during their ring night opener against Philadelphia, leaving the team eager to redeem themselves in front of their home crowd.
In roster news ahead of the game, the Knicks officially announced the signing of Dalton Knecht to a two-way contract. Head coach Mike Brown explained that while Knecht will see time with their G-League affiliate in Westchester to secure playing minutes, the team is ready to utilize him in NBA action when necessary. To make room for Knecht on a two-way deal, the Knicks waived Kevin McCullar Jr.
Reflecting on his new opportunity after being waived by the Los Angeles Lakers, Knecht expressed enthusiasm about joining the Knicks. "I think it's gonna be great [in New York]. Learn the system, learn the new schemes and stuff like that. And you know, just be ready for the new opportunity. I'm excited to just start learning from everybody," Knecht said.
Historically, the regular-season head-to-head matchup is tightly contested, with Orlando holding a narrow 70-68 edge over New York. Last season, the teams split their four regular-season meetings 2-2, though the Knicks later eliminated the Magic during the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas. New York has captured the last three consecutive matchups and six of the past nine games between the two franchises.
