Former Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen and current heavyweight contender Nelson Asofa-Solomona are scheduled to meet in the ring this Friday, November 6. The matchup, which headlines a card at the TikTok Entertainment Centre in Sydney, has been preceded by intense personal friction between the two athletes.

During Thursday's official weigh-in, a significant weight discrepancy was confirmed. Asofa-Solomona tipped the scales at 137.56 kilograms, while the 45-year-old Gallen weighed in at 104.18 kilograms. Despite the 33-kilogram difference and the age gap, Gallen expressed confidence in his preparation, stating that he views the fight as a no-lose situation that allows him to secure his financial future while competing at a high level.

Tensions between the fighters escalated earlier in the week during a press conference where Asofa-Solomona referenced Gallen’s wife. The comment prompted a sharp rebuke from the retired rugby league star, who warned his opponent against involving family members in pre-fight trash talk. Asofa-Solomona later clarified that his remarks were intended to suggest that Gallen should have listened to his wife’s advice regarding his retirement, rather than returning to the ring for a payday.

Beyond the personal barbs, Asofa-Solomona has made inflammatory claims regarding Gallen’s standing among his former peers. The undefeated heavyweight alleged that several of Gallen’s past teammates and colleagues have reached out to him privately, expressing support for his efforts and citing past financial grievances involving the former Blues skipper. Asofa-Solomona suggested that these individuals are eager to see him secure a knockout victory.

Asofa-Solomona, who holds a 3-0 record with three knockouts, has been vocal about his intentions for Friday night. He stated that he is seeking a highlight-reel finish and emphasized that he is not interested in anything less than a knockout. Conversely, Gallen has maintained a focus on his own goals, noting that he is proud to remain competitive against a much younger and heavier opponent.

The event, which is exclusive to pay-per-view, features a full card of professional bouts. While the pre-fight atmosphere has been defined by hostility, Asofa-Solomona noted that there is a level of mutual respect regarding Gallen’s long career in professional sports. Gallen, however, indicated that he does not anticipate a reconciliation with his opponent following the conclusion of the fight.
