Packers Defeat Panthers 27-19 Behind Strong Defense and Jordan Love
Carolina quarterback Bryce Young struggled under heavy pressure as the Green Bay defense recorded six sacks in Thursday night's matchup.
The Green Bay Packers defeated the Carolina Panthers 27-19 in Week 8's Thursday Night Football matchup at Lambeau Field, handing the visiting team their second consecutive loss. Packers quarterback Jordan Love led the charge by completing 30 of 41 passes for 288 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, while enjoying clean protection throughout the night without taking a single sack.
Conversely, Carolina quarterback Bryce Young faced relentless pressure from the Green Bay pass rush. Young was sacked six times for a loss of 33 yards and finished the game completing 23 of 41 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Following the defeat, Young credited the opposing defense for their performance.
"They executed better," Young said, according to ESPN's Mike Kaye. "A lot of stuff was on film, but they just do a really good job of disguising. They're a really good defense. So, we have a lot of respect for them. They were better than us today, for sure. They deserve that win. We should have been better. We've just got to execute better — that's all it is."
Young's evening was further complicated by ongoing offensive line adjustments. The Panthers played without right tackle Taylor Moton, who was placed on injured reserve, and left guard Damien Lewis, who was inactive. Core offensive linemen Monroe Freeling and Corey Bullock started up front, though Bullock later exited the contest due to a quad injury.
Despite absorbing multiple hits and struggling to evade defenders, Young dismissed suggestions that a lingering left knee injury—sustained earlier in the season against the Cleveland Browns—contributed to his difficulties in the pocket. "Yeah, I'm fine," Young told reporters via the team's website. "Everyone's dealing with something at this point in the year. It's football. Nothing like that is an excuse; go out there and play the game."
Carolina briefly sparked a late comeback when Young connected with wide receiver Jalen Coker on a 4th-and-3 play with 5:37 remaining in regulation, resulting in a 26-yard touchdown. However, the missed two-point conversion and a final defensive stand by Green Bay secured the victory for the home team, running out the clock despite a frantic final sequence from the Panthers.
With the defeat, the Panthers hold a 3-4 record and sit atop the NFC South Division standings ahead of Sunday's slate of games. Carolina will have an extended rest period before returning home to host the Denver Broncos in Week 9, while the 5-3 Packers prepare to travel to face the New England Patriots.
