Olympique de Marseille continued its difficult European campaign by suffering a 1-0 defeat against Austrian side Sturm Graz on Thursday during the third matchday of the UEFA Europa League. Playing away at the Merkur Arena, Bruno Genesio's side failed to secure any points, leaving them without a single win after three games in the league phase.

The decisive moment of the match arrived in the 13th minute when young midfielder Nouhoum Kamissoko committed a costly turnover about 30 meters from his own goal. Capitalizing on the mistake, 17-year-old Luca Weinhandl quickly passed the ball to Oumar Diakité, who calmly beat goalkeeper Jeffrey De Lange to give the hosts the lead.

Despite dominating possession throughout the match, Marseille struggled offensively and lacked the creativity needed to break down the Austrian defense. The visitors' first-half performance was marred by technical errors, prompting manager Genesio to implement a series of substitutions at halftime in an attempt to spark a comeback.

Sturm Graz nearly doubled its advantage on multiple occasions through quick counterattacks. Simon Seidl came close when his lob struck the crossbar following another defensive miscue, this time by Keyliane Abdallah. Shortly before the break, Abdallah also hit the post for Marseille, registering the team's best scoring opportunity of the first half.

Following the interval, the introduction of substitutes such as Igor Paixão and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg brought some energy to the French squad. Paixão created several half-chances and tested the Austrian defense, but Marseille did not manage to register their first shot on target until the 70th minute.

Goalkeeper Jeffrey De Lange played a crucial role in keeping the scoreline close, making several key saves in the second half to deny Sturm Graz additional goals. Despite controlling the ball for large portions of the game, the visiting attack remained sterile and failed to find an equalizer.

This latest defeat compounds a troubling start to the European season for Marseille, following previous losses against Beşiktaş and Olympiacos. With fifteen points still available in the league phase, Genesio's squad faces an uphill battle to secure a spot in the playoffs as they prepare for their upcoming domestic fixture against Le Havre and a future European match against Bayer Leverkusen.
