Olympic and World Marathon Champion Peres Jepchirchir Suspended for Doping
The decorated Kenyan runner has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for the banned blood booster EPO.
World and Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended from competition after returning a positive doping test for the banned blood booster erythropoietin, commonly known as EPO. The Athletics Integrity Unit announced the disciplinary measure on Friday, delivering a significant blow to Kenyan athletics.
The 33-year-old athlete provided the out-of-competition sample in Kenya prior to her victory at the Sydney Marathon on August 30, 2026. She crossed the finish line in Sydney with a time of two hours, 18 minutes, and 31 seconds, defeating her compatriot Irene Chepet Cheptai by more than three minutes.
EPO is a natural substance produced by the kidneys that stimulates the creation of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to muscles. When injected, the substance enhances athletic performance and endurance, though it remains detectable in the bloodstream or urine for only a brief period.
Jepchirchir stands as one of the most decorated distance runners in the history of the sport. Her illustrious career features an Olympic gold medal at the Covid-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021, a World Championships victory in Tokyo in September 2025, and a half-marathon world record originally set in 2017 and broken three times in 2020.
In addition to her recent success in Sydney, Jepchirchir has secured four prestigious World Marathon Major titles. Her major victories include the New York City Marathon in 2021, the Boston Marathon in 2022, the London Marathon in 2024, and the Sydney Marathon, which achieved World Marathon Major status in 2025.
The provisional suspension will remain in place while the Athletics Integrity Unit conducts a full investigation into the matter. Jepchirchir maintains the right to contest the findings through the regulatory process.
This case adds to ongoing integrity challenges within the region. Since 2017, the Athletics Integrity Unit has suspended or banned more than 140 Kenyan athletes, a group that includes current women's marathon world record-holder Ruth Chepngetich.
The latest suspension comes at a sensitive time for Kenyan sports administration. World Athletics recently awarded Nairobi the hosting rights for the 2029 world championships, a decision expected to increase global scrutiny of the nation's anti-doping policies and enforcement measures.
