The Edmonton Oilers defeated the New York Rangers 4-1 at Madison Square Garden, extending their lead in the Pacific Division. Superstar Connor McDavid led the charge with a standout performance that etched his name deeper into the National Hockey League record books.

Just 50 seconds into the contest, McDavid took control of the puck near his own blue line, used his trademark speed to maneuver past defenders, and beat Rangers goaltender Dylan Garand with an elegant shot. This marked the eighth time in his career that McDavid scored within the opening minute of a game, breaking a franchise record he previously shared with Mark Messier.

McDavid finished the night with one goal and one assist, securing his 30th helper of the campaign in his 15th appearance. By achieving this milestone in 15 games, he surpassed the previous record of 16 games set by Wayne Gretzky during the 1984-85 season. Furthermore, McDavid became the eighth player in NHL history to record an assist in 15 consecutive games to begin a season.

Edmonton continued to pressure New York early in the matchup. Colton Dach added a second goal from the half-distance at the seven-minute mark, capitalizing on an assist from Leon Draisaitl. In the second period, Evan Bouchard extended the lead to 3-0 during a power play, converting a setup from Draisaitl and McDavid.

The Rangers managed to respond in the latter stages of the middle frame. During the 34th minute, Pavel Dorofeyev scored from close range to put New York on the board for his first goal since joining the team from Vegas during the offseason. However, the home side failed to generate a sustained comeback.

Dach secured his second goal of the evening with 40 seconds remaining in regulation, finding the empty net following Draisaitl's second helper of the night. The victory brought Edmonton's offense to 39 points for McDavid through 15 games, maintaining an 11-point lead over Draisaitl at the top of the NHL scoring leaderboard.

Defenceman Evan Bouchard also reached a historic milestone for Edmonton, collecting a goal and two assists to become the fourth defenceman in league history to accumulate at least 25 points within his first 15 games of a season, joining Bobby Orr, Al MacInnis, and Denis Potvin.

In goal for the Oilers, Matt Tomkins made 27 saves to earn his first NHL victory since April 17, 2024. Operating as the team's fourth-string option due to injuries and rest rotations, Tomkins helped secure the convincing road win and solid positioning at the top of the Pacific Division.
