No. 1 Miami Rallies Past UNC Football 38-35 in Hard-Fought Thriller
Mark Fletcher leads the top-ranked Hurricanes with three touchdowns as the Tar Heels fall just short of a major upset.
The University of North Carolina football team came within minutes of securing a historic upset before falling 38-35 to top-ranked Miami on Saturday night at Kenan Stadium. With the loss, the Tar Heels dropped to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the unbeaten Hurricanes improved their record to 8-0 and 6-0 in conference play.
North Carolina held a 28-24 advantage early in the fourth quarter following a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Demon June that capped off a sustained, methodical drive. However, the nation's top-ranked team responded when running back Mark Fletcher Jr. punched in a crucial 2-yard touchdown run on fourth down with 7:49 remaining in the contest.
The turning point arrived moments later on the ensuing possession when Miami defender Marquise Lightfoot stripped the ball from Tar Heels quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. from behind. Teammate Justin Scott recovered the fumble with 5:33 left on the clock, handing the momentum firmly back to the visitors and setting up a decisive scoring drive.
Miami capitalized on the turnover when quarterback Darian Mensah connected with Malachi Toney on a 9-yard touchdown strike, extending the lead to 38-28 with just 2:33 remaining. Despite a late touchdown pass from Edwards to Jelani Thurman and a valiant effort that went down to the final minute, North Carolina was unable to recover an onside kick, sealing the narrow defeat.
Edwards put together a stellar performance through the air for the Tar Heels, throwing for a season-high 341 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end Jelani Thurman proved to be a lethal red-zone target with two touchdown receptions in the first half, while receiver Trech Kekahuna added three catches for 57 yards and another score.
Despite the offensive rhythm orchestrated under head coach Bill Belichick's staff, North Carolina struggled defensively to contain Miami's potent attack and Fletcher, who accounted for three touchdowns on the night. The defeat extends the Tar Heels' historical struggles against top-ranked opponents to 0-12 and brings a halt to their five-game winning streak in the head-to-head series against the Hurricanes.
With a .500 record and four regular-season games remaining, North Carolina faces mounting pressure to secure bowl eligibility after dropping consecutive games. Meanwhile, Miami advances toward a high-profile road matchup against No. 5 Notre Dame with its undefeated record intact.
