Actor Nicolas Cage revealed that he is currently living out of hotels after a massive sinkhole caused extensive damage to his $10.5 million Malibu mansion. The 62-year-old actor purchased the four-storey oceanfront property in 2024, but it was struck by severe coastal erosion in September when a vast hole swallowed his driveway and spread toward the front door.

Speaking at the Los Angeles Comic Con on October 31, Cage shared a candid update regarding his living situation when asked about his Halloween plans. "I'm currently a little bit homeless," Cage admitted. "Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I'm just sort of living in hotels, so I don't have normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight."

Despite being displaced, the actor noted he still planned to take his four-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in Santa Monica and watch Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic, The Shining, after she went to bed. Meanwhile, Cage has been working to save his four-level property, rushing to file multiple permits with city officials to combat the ongoing damage.

The sinkhole grew significantly over the weeks, expanding from its original footprint to wrap around the side of the property toward the front entrance. It swallowed a fence, ladders, and portable toilets utilized by construction workers. In addition to destroying the driveway after washing away the land underneath, the disaster broke both water and gas lines.

The damage forced the Southern California Gas Company to shut off the gas supply to the area. Officials subsequently issued an evacuation order for surrounding properties due to public safety concerns, as the expanding sinkhole restricted vital access for residents and emergency services.

The City of Malibu declared a local emergency following the sinkhole formation near Sea Level Drive. Authorities warned that conditions could worsen due to forecasted high tides and heavy rain brought by Hurricane Marie, prompting a Coastal Flood Advisory. The American Red Cross also established a temporary shelter for affected residents at Malibu High School.

To mitigate the threat to his investment, Cage requested and received approval for emergency building permits from city officials. Permissions were granted to pack sandbags against the beach and exterior of the property for wave protection, remove asphalt debris from the sinkhole, and prepare for shoring installation and soil sample excavation. It remains unclear when the actor will be able to safely return to his home.
