New French Drama Series Revisits the Mourmelon Disappearances
The four-part television production explores a notorious multi-decade judicial fiasco inspired by real-life events in France.
A new four-part fictional television series titled Les Disparus des Argonnes premieres on France 2. The production draws inspiration from the long-running unsolved criminal case known as the Mourmelon disappearances, which shocked the country during the 1980s.
Between 1980 and 1987, at least eight young men, mostly conscripts completing their military service, vanished after hitchhiking near a military camp in the Marne department. For years, the military administration maintained that the soldiers had simply deserted, while families rejected the official narrative and demanded answers.
The core of the television narrative follows a grieving mother named Jocelyne Veyrades, portrayed by actress Alix Poisson. Fictionalized for the screen, her relentless campaign for the truth mirrors the decades-long struggles faced by real families who fought against institutional silence and sluggish investigations.
The real-life investigation took a major turn in August 1988 during a routine traffic stop in Saône-et-Loire. Authorities arrested Pierre Chanal, a chief warrant officer and instructor stationed at the Mourmelon military camp, after finding a bound Hungarian hitchhiker inside his recreational vehicle.
In 1990, Chanal was convicted of raping and sequestering the tourist, serving a ten-year prison sentence before his release in 1995. Nearly twenty-three years after the first disappearance, DNA evidence eventually linked him to several of the missing conscripts, leading to a new murder indictment.
Before a verdict could be reached, Chanal died by suicide in prison in October 2003, leaving the judicial process permanently unresolved and many victims' bodies undiscovered. The French state was subsequently condemned for gross negligence in 2005.
Created by writer Julie Peyr and directed by Safy Nebbou, the fictional adaptation won the award for best drama and suspense series at the 2026 La Rochelle Fiction Festival. The creators emphasized that the project functions as a drama rather than a strict documentary, blending social critique with the emotional devastation experienced by the relatives.
Alongside Alix Poisson, the cast features Anne Charrier portraying the suspect's sister, alongside Mehdi Nebbou, Félix Moati, and Aïssa Maïga. The broadcast aims to highlight the human toll of institutional indifference and the enduring trauma carried by grieving families.
