Naruto Franchise Expands With New Manga, Arcade Events, and Franchise Shifts

The enduring ninja saga celebrates its legacy with new projects, voice actor reflections, and sweeping story changes in the Boruto series.

The expansive world of Naruto continues to captivate audiences more than two decades after its initial launch, driven by major franchise developments, upcoming arcade events, and significant narrative shifts in its current manga run. Fans recently gathered at New York Comic Con to celebrate the legacy of Masashi Kishimoto's iconic creation, which has spawned hundreds of episodes, films, video games, and an upcoming trading card game.

During the convention, original Japanese voice actors Junko Takeuchi and Noriaki Sugiyama reflected on their decades-long journey portraying Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha. Discussing the emotional depth required for their roles, Takeuchi noted that she had to build her character's motivations from scratch during early production. Meanwhile, Sugiyama highlighted their confrontational scenes at The Final Valley as a critical artistic breakthrough that required intense vocal synergy and in-person studio recording sessions.

The franchise is also preparing for fresh storytelling material. Creator Masashi Kishimoto is returning to write for the manga for the first time since it concluded in 2014 with a new project titled NARUTO: Shadow Rising. Additionally, a crossover with the early 1990s manga series NINKŪ is scheduled to debut next year, allowing both veteran voice actors to step back into the younger versions of their legendary roles.

In the publishing world, the Boruto storyline is shaking up the franchise's fundamental lore. Chapter 38 of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex confirmed that the Hidden Leaf Village and other ninja forces face potential dissolution. Leadership within the Land of Fire views military strength as unnecessary in a largely peaceful modern world, proposing a political shift that mirrors historical real-world transitions like Japan's Meiji Restoration.

This radical direction aims to reallocate military spending and install a puppet regime, threatening to erase the traditional status of shinobi entirely. While characters like Kashin Koji remain focused on looming threats like the Divine Trees, the political maneuvering introduces profound uncertainty regarding the geopolitical structure of the ninja nations.

Beyond manga and television, the franchise maintains a strong presence in interactive entertainment. The action fighting game Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections, released as part of the series' 20th-anniversary celebration, features the largest roster in STORM history with over 130 playable characters spanning the complete timeline across multiple platforms.

Physical merchandise collaborations are also expanding. Round1 Arcade announced an upcoming event starting on November 25, 2026, featuring themed merchandise based on the original anime series. Fans will be able to collect button pins, keychains, club cards, and collector's cups featuring classic characters like Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, Kakashi Hatake, and Iruka Umino through game credit purchases.
