Naomi Osaka Defeats Jasmine Paolini in WTA 500 Tournament Match in Tokyo
The Japanese tennis star secured a straight-sets victory over her Italian opponent in a hard-fought match at the Tokyo tournament.
Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka triumphed over Italy's Jasmine Paolini with a score of 6:3, 7:6(4) during a WTA 500 tournament match held in Tokyo, Japan. Coached by Polish specialist Tomasz Wiktorowski, Osaka managed to overcome a tense moment on her own serve in the second set before ultimately clinching the match in a tiebreak.
Osaka established an early advantage in the opening set by breaking serve and jumping out to a 3:0 lead. Although Paolini fought back to level the score, the Japanese competitor captured three consecutive games to take the first set 6:3.
The second set proved much tighter as both players maintained their serves for a prolonged stretch. At 2:2, Osaka capitalized on a forehand error from her opponent to secure a break point, though Paolini quickly responded by breaking back.
As the second set progressed to 3:3, Paolini requested a medical timeout to address pain in her left foot. Following treatment, she returned to the court and generated a strong 40:0 opportunity on Osaka's serve while leading 6:5. However, the Italian failed to convert those break points, allowing Osaka to equalize the set.
In the ensuing tiebreak, Osaka pulled ahead to win 7:4, securing her advancement to the next round where she is scheduled to face Mia Pohankova. With this victory, Osaka also avenged her previous defeat against Paolini, who had won their only prior head-to-head meeting at the Miami tournament in 2025.
During the 1-hour and 37-minute encounter, Osaka recorded seven aces compared to one for Paolini. The 29-year-old athlete has displayed strong form lately following her return to professional competition after giving birth to her daughter, Shai, three years ago.
