Milwaukee Bucks and Jaime Jaquez Jr. Fail to Reach Rookie Scale Extension

The wing player will enter restricted free agency next offseason after failing to secure a contract extension before the league deadline.

The Milwaukee Bucks and Jaime Jaquez Jr. did not reach an agreement on a rookie scale extension by the league's October 19 deadline. As a result, the 25-year-old wing will play out the remainder of the 2026-27 season before becoming a restricted free agent during the next offseason.

Jaquez, who was selected 18th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, joined the Bucks in July as part of a blockbuster trade that sent franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat. Despite his strong performance last season, where he finished as the runner-up for the Sixth Man of the Year award, the organization opted not to finalize a new deal at this time.

Bucks general manager Jon Horst previously noted that while the team values Jaquez significantly, reaching an extension was not a certainty. "We targeted these guys for a reason," Horst stated in late September. "We value them significantly. And we'll, in good faith and sincerely, engage in those conversations. But we may or may not do an extension, and that's OK."

Before the start of the current training camp, Jaquez maintained a professional focus on his immediate responsibilities. "I'm here to work right now," he said. "My contract is the one that is going into next year, and that's the only one I can really worry about."

Following the expiration of the extension window, the Bucks will have several paths forward when Jaquez hits restricted free agency. The team could negotiate a new contract, offer a qualifying offer to match potential bids from other clubs, facilitate a sign-and-trade, or allow the player to sign a one-year qualifying offer. Alternatively, the team could choose not to extend a qualifying offer, which would make Jaquez an unrestricted free agent.

On the court, Jaquez has continued to contribute to the Bucks' rotation. In a recent 132-125 loss to the Chicago Bulls on October 23, he recorded 19 points and 11 rebounds. The team is currently navigating a period of transition as they redefine their organizational direction following the high-profile roster changes made during the offseason.
