Nicolò Barella admitted Inter lacked the correct attitude following their defeat to Milan.

AC Milan secured a 3-1 victory against Inter Milan during a Halloween derby clash at San Siro. The high-stakes match saw Milan capitalize on crucial Inter errors to claim local bragging rights, while extending Inter's winless streak in the fixture.

The match marked a historic milestone, celebrated in the Italian sports press with extensive coverage of a century of derbies at the iconic venue. Milan entered the fixture facing the risk of falling ten points behind the league leaders, making a strong performance imperative for their campaign.

Inter struggled with their approach to the game from the opening whistle. Midfielder Nicolò Barella endured a difficult evening, shouldering responsibility for errors that contributed to Milan's scoring opportunities. Following a defensive lapse that allowed Adrien Rabiot to score Milan's second goal, Barella committed a foul near the edge of the box that enabled Diego Moreira to convert a decisive free kick for the third goal.

Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Barella addressed his team's performance and mentality honestly. "Since the beginning of the year, we have lacked the right attitude," Barella stated. He noted that while the team has demonstrated resilience in second halves, relying on comebacks is unsustainable.

Barella also discussed Inter's ongoing struggles in the derby, noting that the team has not secured a victory in the fixture for two and a half years, dating back to April 2024. He acknowledged that the squad has been inconsistent and pointed out that individual mistakes have heavily impacted recent matches.

Reflecting on tactical choices made by coach Cristian Chivu, Barella explained that the team faced attacking emergencies during the week due to illness, which forced adjustments. "We struggled to get going, finding situations with men between the lines, and we were not well-practiced in the formations. More than formations, however, attitude makes the difference," Barella added.

Despite the disappointing result, Inter remains near the top of the standings depending on upcoming fixtures, but the derby defeat highlights areas requiring urgent improvement. The squad will need to refocus quickly as the grueling Serie A season continues with matches every three days.
